I have been shooting 4" for about 4 years, both IDPA and IPSC (Glock).
I recently switched to a 5" pistol, and have been shooting exclusively that for a 5 months.
If you shoot a short pistol well, you will shoot a longer one better. the extra length helps your accuracy for many reasons, better sight picture, better front sight control, more muzzle speed, anyway.
Regardless of what you choose, a good sight system makes a difference....
With that being said, all this things are negligible is your fundamentals are lacking...
If you are out shooting a stock 4" pistol, then an upgrade is always good but dont expect to be Miculek just because of the gun.
Cheers
