Gday CGN, how are you all doing over in the Cold?I've just spent 4 days out with a fellow from my local Forum (Aushunt), by the name of Whistler.
This fellow had the honours to Guide me onto my Buffalo a few years back.
Another Year an now another Trip in the books, some cool chapters written along this one.
i'll start off with the forecast of 40 degree C temps which greeted us every morning after around 9am, We awaited Sams arrival of Whistlers gear which had been stored since a previous hunt in the famed Wonnangatta Valley sometime last year, without that we wouldn't be having much fun.
We go into Camp midway in the Valley an unload some essentials before heading off on a quick drive to show Whis the surrounds, as we got back we were greeted by Sam and several bags of Camo, camping gear.
That evening Whis was eager to get out into the bush after a lengthy absent being up in the Northern Terrotory, I headed up to a spot which gives quite a decent view of the opposing face, quite far for a shot but with the big 300 Win mag loaded with 208 Amaxes and a suitable high mag scope, I thought it may of been a good start.
Whistler lining up on a Hind and Calf which fed out from a bed in the Dying minutes of light, allowing us with only 10 minutes to asses a suitable location within range and a rest to shoot off. No cigar, not enough time to set up, but a great start, Sambar deer up off the Flats on the faces.
That very next morning the alarm sings out at 5am and I get up an go an kick whistler in the guts to wake him up! a quick Brew and we set off down into the same Gulley with plans on heading up to the same spot, with hopes of seeing deer move on up as the morning grew older.
We slow Stalked up the gulley as it snaked for a good Kilometer or so, glassing and listening for any Deer.
I didn't spot much but heard the parrots making a fuss as they seem to do when ?something is in the presence, I don't act on it but I take note of it, as we went on a while I noticed the parrots had moved across an up the gulley, orr something had moved off into another group of parrots presence..
We kept up just off the blackberry line , glassing across intently and often, into some sticks and over a slight rise/bent in the gulley an THERE, there it is, a blackish, brownish Tail! a brown backline and a mane.. You bewdy its what we are after!
I excitedly let Whistler know we have a Sambar and a Stag at that, to just freeze and not move.
I'm pointing out down the gulley, "there, Deer! 100m , just there, don't move!!"......
whistler hunts with an empty chamber and once located the deer was some how able to chamber a load while the deer Fed along the opposite side, moving now and then , looking our way but not becoming alert and once stepped into the clearing 40m!!! Away, at 6:20 the BOOM of the Rem700 300Winmag quietened the Morning and the Stag Dropped in its Tracks.... Straight into the blackberry.. Great!
Poor judgment at first distance glance led to a slight delay in picking the animal up but once on target... Happy days
Proud hunter, Walkin em up!
Whistlers main priority was Meat, so without further Ado
Shallow wound chanel from the Amax. Spined and must of top lung..
Pt 2 To Come
