Gday CGN, how are you all doing over in the Cold?I've just spent 4 days out with a fellow from my local Forum (Aushunt), by the name of Whistler.
This fellow had the honours to Guide me onto my Buffalo a few years back. ;)

Another Year an now another Trip in the books, some cool chapters written along this one.

i'll start off with the forecast of 40 degree C temps which greeted us every morning after around 9am, We awaited Sams arrival of Whistlers gear which had been stored since a previous hunt in the famed Wonnangatta Valley sometime last year, without that we wouldn't be having much fun.
We go into Camp midway in the Valley an unload some essentials before heading off on a quick drive to show Whis the surrounds, as we got back we were greeted by Sam and several bags of Camo, camping gear.

That evening Whis was eager to get out into the bush after a lengthy absent being up in the Northern Terrotory, I headed up to a spot which gives quite a decent view of the opposing face, quite far for a shot but with the big 300 Win mag loaded with 208 Amaxes and a suitable high mag scope, I thought it may of been a good start.

Whistler lining up on a Hind and Calf which fed out from a bed in the Dying minutes of light, allowing us with only 10 minutes to asses a suitable location within range and a rest to shoot off. No cigar, not enough time to set up, but a great start, Sambar deer up off the Flats on the faces.

That very next morning the alarm sings out at 5am and I get up an go an kick whistler in the guts to wake him up! a quick Brew and we set off down into the same Gulley with plans on heading up to the same spot, with hopes of seeing deer move on up as the morning grew older.
We slow Stalked up the gulley as it snaked for a good Kilometer or so, glassing and listening for any Deer.
I didn't spot much but heard the parrots making a fuss as they seem to do when ?something is in the presence, I don't act on it but I take note of it, as we went on a while I noticed the parrots had moved across an up the gulley, orr something had moved off into another group of parrots presence..

We kept up just off the blackberry line , glassing across intently and often, into some sticks and over a slight rise/bent in the gulley an THERE, there it is, a blackish, brownish Tail! a brown backline and a mane.. You bewdy its what we are after!

I excitedly let Whistler know we have a Sambar and a Stag at that, to just freeze and not move.
I'm pointing out down the gulley, "there, Deer! 100m , just there, don't move!!"......

whistler hunts with an empty chamber and once located the deer was some how able to chamber a load while the deer Fed along the opposite side, moving now and then , looking our way but not becoming alert and once stepped into the clearing 40m!!! Away, at 6:20 the BOOM of the Rem700 300Winmag quietened the Morning and the Stag Dropped in its Tracks.... Straight into the blackberry.. Great!

Poor judgment at first distance glance led to a slight delay in picking the animal up but once on target... Happy days

Pt 2 To Come

WL

We were back in camp by 830 with some prime cuts while we waited for the Heat to come up we headed into put the meat in a cooler in town near by.

We planned an arvo hunt of sorts, it was to be a short walk up a steep climb before sitting an waiting, for hours... sounds fun.. right?

Left nice an early incase an animal would come out early to drink down below, as the hours ticked past an the temps slowly shrunk, I remember a fellow mentioning how he "cant sleep during the day"
IMG_2765sleep.jpg

Right on Cue a heavy bodied Dark beast emerged from the bushline, step by step he slowly browsed the blackberry, I raced back to get the camera from my backpack while mentioning to Whistler a stag had arrived, Although a Cast, early Velvet model, I mentioned he was to be out of Bounds today but keep an eye out incase another walks out.

Unfortunatly another didn't walk out and darkness grew.... That's Sambar hunting, greatful of the Presence such an elusive animal didn't mean to give us!

The Next morning, Day 2- The alarm Sang and a quick Swipe of the finger had it Silenced!!! That's better, zzzzz
45 minutes later and I'm kicking myself, I wake Whistler and we gather an sort the gear, I race off as I know I am later an chances are Slim, Whistler decides he needs to lock up hes Ute an stow away the Gear, I wave him on an say I gota go..

I get to location pretty short time later and WOWSERS! Where is Whistler when you need him.. I glass for 10 minutes and Here comes along the game trail, ridge, a Wide looking Sambar Stag!
I grab a few logs and put them together for a rest, I don't even think of getting the camera out, I think of Whistler! I sneak around and attempt to run the 500m back to camp uphill, I get about 250m Away and look back at the stag, its moving along , knowing exactly where it wants to be.. the Tree line!

I have a Kimber that's yet to be used on what it was purchased for, I contemplate the chances of running back into the Deer once we crunch down into the Bushline, 2 people trying to follow up a mature stag.... middle of summer in the Cornflakes.. Good luck!!!

I turn around an get down closer to the animal, I don't even range but Guestimate its 250 away, I lay down Little Seven over the backpack an settled in, High shoulder and Press..... The Stag immediately Drops and I follow it up and it lay motionless.

Deep down I am pumped, My little 7mm 08 done the Deed and opened the Account with a respectable Stag, a long time over due for many hunts, But I am also a little disappointed that I wasn't able to Guide Whistler onto a Respectable Sambar Stag.. If you snooze ya loose and sometimes the stars do align.

I eventually made my way back into Camp and believe it or Not Whistler was still packing the bloody ute with the Rifle strapped over hes shoulder!!! I walked up with my arms in the air above my head, like you do when its a big moose.
We went down to examine the beast.

After the shot the Deer had rolled off a few Ft bench onto the farm track, I'm guessing giving the antler the little help it needed to Dislodge (out of sync/many sambar velvet) I was disappointed with that but such is Sambar hunting.

Backstraps were taken out to use for Sausage/patty and the Antlers taken.

Projectile I found, Fed powershock 150gr 7mm08 200m poi lodged in spine/backstrap busting rib.

That Arvo we Went out in Search for Fallow Deer for the Freezer, we went to sit and wait and upon arriving I spotted deer right away on the face a few hundred meters way! too easy I thought.

Whistler got out eventually and got all of the gear ready to Take a shot on the Deer at 350 odd meters away, moving around a bit but feeding away.
I tried to set up for footage an what not but I was a little frusterated with the dicking around HAHA, I also wasn't too happy with the choice of Rest setup but I wasn't the shooter. I was just waiting for Him to miss sooner so we could get on with the hunt!! haha!

Boom, 3 deer run off.

We got up an sit an wait, nothing shows so we move on before dark, spy a dozen fallow move off at distance as we drove back toward the gate.. bugger.

Next morning another Crack for the Fallow, table fare on the menu. Unusually not many Fallow about but I get whistler a Shot on a dozen Fallow which were feeding out on the Harvested woods. The dust Flew high and the Deer darted and took off.

Not much longer later we were given another Chance, from around 300m also but the Deer didn't quite stop long enough for a shot! The fallow just wasn't to be!!

toward the end of the hunt, we sat and over looked a nice clear fall When down the far end I Notice a while an brown thing moving along! I mentioned to get down an stay cool... Dogs!

I sing out some Howls, on and off for 20 minutes, I gain their attention and the Dog decides to come investigate, it moves in from 500m up too 150m , I had the Dog lined up with the 7x leupold... things felt nice.

Then Whistler pipes in, "Oi, whos Shoot it? " IIRC I pretty sternly mentioned that if he was too shoot it, then to shoot the fkn thing dead!
I noticed the Yellow dog was back an forth from the far rise, I kept howling and then BOOM the white Dog sunk in its tracks!! You beauty!!!

after another minute of Howling, the Yellow ##### had not moved, so I let Whistler know the Yellow ones position, 305m, sitting Pretty..
For some reason Whistlers 300WM is Zeroed at 270m, so drop is around 2 inch at 300m, I watched in the Binos and as the Btch looked to her Left, The 208 Amax smoked her in the chest and it was an unbelievable sight as the Dog instantly switched off limp. Wow.

What a Fkin Morning!!!

Great write up, as usual!

How do the hunting seasons fall in OZ? I am still a hunting newbie, but I assumed that hunting when an animal is in velvet is a no-go.

EDIT

Found the answer.....cool!

Thanks for the replies Fellas!

its worth noting that Whistler was born Deaf and wears a hearing Aid and can pick up some noise, so not 100% deaf.

makes the stalking hard as he is mostly unaware of the crunch he can be making, or brushing past shrubs. especially hearing animals moving into or around him, but when the big sticks break he can pick it up.

Glad yas enjoyed!

cheers

Interesting post.... I hunted almost deaf this year.... Had a very severe cold in October and my ears were plugged up good afterwards for a month....

I sucked at grouse hunting because of it, but curious, does whistler have an "uncanny" ability to spot movement?.... I found myself taking more "visual cues".... On stand..... And spotted one of the whitetails I shot by seeing the movement of a single hoof from 100 yards in cedars.....

He could use a set of alpha ear muffs...... Amplifies sound and then shuts off and acts as a muffle when the boom happens..... I love mine....

Don't use them for hunting, but great at the range when you want to have a conversation and not take your muffs on and off....
