These aboriginals have no law apparently, and use their "treaty rights" to harvest at will..... I would love to to see a band have some game laws even if they were more slack than ours....... the moose population is hurting and nobody can deny that....... regardless of race or creed...... All I would ask is that the councils institute a law or restrictions of some kind....
In a perfect world, we would all think alike......... and there would be no consideration as to race or creed.....
In the hunting world, we all have a mutual interest in the continuation of a harvestable species......
And wiping out a family of said species is a big blow....... regardless of "rights"
I respect you too crowca...... we share many similar interests... regardless of race creed or any of the other bs......
Would any moose hunters here agree to a 10 year ban on hunting to help a dwindling population a chance to grow? I personally do not believe that hunting is a major cause of dwindling populations,but am of the opinion shooting calves will likely not help growth.

With the winters getting milder and shorter, the moose are being hit hard by winter ticks. This makes over "harvesting" that much more consequential.If aboriginal leaders don't soon recognize this, moose will be going the way of the dodo bird.

Agreed but we will still have the beaver. The reality is that Prov/Fed government has no interest in supporting wildlife as they assume it will always be there. They are right in a way as the land may be there but all the beasties are gone. Except for mice maybe. That'll be good hunting.
Well...here in Nova Scotia the First Nations are implementing a moose tag system for aboriginals starting this year. We also get 3 salmon tags per household.....so things are starting to be regulated here, as it should be.

This argument is ridiculous...as is the shooting of the moose with no regard for ethics or population management. You can not have separate rules for 2 groups harvest of game without negative effects to the species being harvested. That is the issue, native and non native hunters should be working together for the best management practices for moose. It only benefits both groups, until government regulate both groups it will only be a continued decline in the overall population.
What I find most ridiculous is that regulators would change harvest practices for one group and not the other.
Treaty rights be dammed I say! Work together to try and save or maintain a sustainable and harvestable moose population for the good of all hunters now and future generations.
To all native hunters we understand that it is your legal right..... but just because it is your right does not make the indiscriminate harvest of a species in decline RIGHT. This will likely fall on deaf ears but hear goes...if you're a native hunter and can see the bigger picture get together with band leaders in you communities and help yourselves and all hunters.
And most of all the MOOSE!

Obviously, nobody told the moose that by treaty they are forbidden from going extinct.
This thread is nothing more than a vent for us legal, law abiding, respectful and well taught hunters.
Sad, sad and shot in the gut feeling for all of us who have witnessed, and heard of the past and ongoing abuse of the indian (NATIVE ABORIGINAL) rights on a country which was once resource rich.
The walleye are caught by the thousands in indian nets and ROT in in those nets cause they are not sober enough to bring them in......recent fish n wildlife laws aks - the Canadian Government made it legal for indians to catch all they want.
Tax paying non treaty (non white card white people) in Alberta can catch one walleye. Indians can catch all they want, legally. Indians can and do shoot all the moose and all the elk they want, morning, noon and night, and they do at night, from couches in the back of their pick ups with spot lights, and a case of booze,....
they shoot white tail deer and feed it to their dogs. I have seen them shoot a cow moose and two calf's and take the hinds only, leaving the rest to rot. Powerless because our canadian game laws approve and allow this.
I know too many who hunt and kill to sell meat...
and our Fish & Wildlife officers will not even answer a complaint call....
I live in the north of Alberta.
I watch and hear the abuse of our food and every resources their lawyers (which our tax dollars paid for) rape us for...
Watch them **uck us for the rest of the petroleum resource, pipeline etc,
It is a Native playground. And our govt is bent over and waiting, greased.
Plain and simple.
Eats me everyday.

You seem to think it makes no difference whether the moose were shot by licensed hunters or unlicensed Indians.
