#4 Shells Coyote Question

3" #4 copperplated buckshot is my perfered load for coyotes. I have killed them with 3" #6 turkey magnum loads from close range. I aim for the head/neck area.

CROWCA,
You shoot coyotes with shotguns quite a bit don't you? What shot do you guys use? I don't have to worry about using birdshot here as I can't use anything less than #4 buck to shoot coyotes with by law. I have always felt that should be a minimum anyways for consistent humane kills but what are your thoughts as a very experienced 'yote slayer.
Kim

A coyote cut in half with bird shot at 7 yards is a tall tale, when I see the pictures I will apologize.

I like 00 buck 3" others use #4 buck not my preference. You have to hit them in the vitals with any shot size you shoot,I have killed them with #7 bird shot but they need to be close, was a target of opportunity!

If he is well hit, and a little tug from me on the head and you from the other end and voila! CGN history! :D

Just for fun, someone go out and blast something from 20 feet with a load of birdshot, cmon , please! Tell us about the effects you would expect on anything organic ( no zombies ) up to 100 pounds.

You flattery is to much we are just doing what we can to help out our hunting area.(thats bull#### it is just a ####ing riot )There are wester hunters who I am sure shoot hundreds every season they have more experience than I will ever have. The biggest thrill is having a coyote sneaking away from the tracker and you see him coming with your potato masher in your hands!!!Thats hard on material!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I need to qualify hard on(excited state while hunting)may not be what you were thinking!!There are a bunch of old hunters with us who may not have had a excited state in many years!!!!

I've killed them with #6 and #4 shot from both 20 gauge and even a 3" .410 I prefer BB loads over buckshot for yotes as they amt to a .22 rf in body hits and can soak up a lot of hits.BB's through the lungs and they're done.............Harold

I have hit raccoons at across the barn distances with a full load of 4's quite a few times, no bisection ever occured.

A coyote is 5 or more time bigger than a bull raccoon.

Coyotes taken with small shot are targets of oppurtunity, purposely chasing coyotes with small shot is foolish and un-ethical.

Alot of people have no respect for coyotes but nothing deserves to run off and die, chances are wounded coyotes won't be able to catch natural prey so cats, dogs and chickens will be on the menu.

I like a #4 buck up front in 2 3/4 up to 3 1/2" backed up by 00, 000 or hard to find #1 buck. Once you follow a few wounded yotes through sawmps, backyards, into windwells, culverts, stomp piles, under porches, barns and lose some you will stay away from using light shot. All you need is one good hit from a pellet using a 00 or 000 buck, but there is a lot of space between them and a yote facing you is a small target.

You got a small barn. :p

Did the coons run away??

Would I recommend #4's for general yote hunting- no - even under 30 yards it is not ideal, but given a good presentation I would take it.

My comments were mostly directed back at the 7 yards reference. Not too many things wont die from a blast of almost anything from 20 feet.

I love dogs and shooting yotes from my tractor cab ( .22LR ,shotgun too loud ) is not something I get any pleasure from. So I don't condone wounding either.
