400 Yard Elk cartridge . what's your Pick

IMO, anyone who cant handle a little recoil shouldn't be shooting at any game at 400 yards, it's quite simple really.

Same goes for this forum, can handle big recoil but can’t handle some words on a forum? Don’t be here, Lmao, hey cat, did I accidentally strike a nerve? Is it with you or the guy who’s over gunned? Lol, if the guy is confident and comfortable in himself he would have laughed at my post and no need to engage at all, ya know...nothing to prove. Can’t imagine getting this easily worked up online over the silliest of discussions that we geek out about and especially when comment wasn’t even related to you. Lack of humility makes for zero fun.

If rottawa doesn't kill me, I like to retire somewhere out there as well. But Medicine Hat still holds my curiosity LOL!

Medicine Hat has a great rifle range/club. Great antelope, mule deer, elk and whitetail hunting around the Hat. Upland and migratory hunting is great as well. City and people are very conservative, a bit red-neck, which is great by my standards. You'll probably fit-in.

Who you calling Rednek! The hat is nice, best if retired with a little extra coin...I fit neither group sadly

Picked up a set of elk sheds yesterday.
It doesn’t much matter what cartridge you use if you haven’t learned how to judge distance and when/where/how to shoot.

Don't know if you have point restrictions, but there are yahoos in BC that claim they shoot the points off smallish legal animals so other guys don't get them.

If I'm hunting long range I go for my 300 win mag. If I'm hunting close range I go for my 45-70(but it doesn't make an appearance if any fields are involved).

A few years back I went put to help a buddy take a 69" , heavy bull moose put of the bush.
He left his 45/70 in the quad box and hiked down to a river expectorant g a long shot so took his 325WSM.
On the way back, he shot the bull at 50 yards, it was about 35 yards from where he left his quad!:p
Cat

Hahahaha ain't that just the way!

My son went up North on. Stone Sheep hunt - he’s a big 270 Win fan ! He got his rifle all tuned in with 130 gr Accubond Handloads - shot it a pile at 100 -600 yards All ready for that LONG shot in the high mountains and ended up killing his ram at 7O yards Could have Got it with a open sited 30-30 ! lol RJ

LOL must be tough to get that close to one without it hearing/smelling you and having a chance to boogie all the same!

My last one: Red deer. Remington 700 heavy barrel in 308. Swarovski 5-25 or some such scope on it, musta been a 56mm objective.

30-40 yards lol...

No we don't pick the kit :p

Yup. I’ve shot one at 428 and one at 60. Always good to be prepared for a long one!

280AI with 140gr Nosler AB

Elk #1 396yds broadside, slowly walked 25 yds and laid down finished

Elk #2 415yds quartering towards me, took off running and expired in ~100yds

Love the 280AI, its such a great cartridge
