40cal 1911

40 S&W in John Browning's 1911 remains problematic. When the nice people at Colt made some 40S&W's for their 1911's they had so much trouble they abandoned the caliber.
40S&W works great in Glocks and some other autos.
40S&W kicks/recoils almost as much as a .45acp round. Skip the 40, and buy a quality .45acp auto.

Sorry hatman1793.... Don't agree....have three very nice .40's.....shoot them all way more than my .45's.....ammo is cheaper and readily available....long live the .40 ...a good one shoots as well as both 9mm and .45..

I am gratified that your 40's work for you Import! 155 & 165 grain weight 40 cal bullets are the best choices for 40S&W. Believe me when I report that 180 grain 40S&W rounds recoil just as much as 45acp.
In my discipline, PPC, virtually no one uses 40S&W. unless you are making "major" or want a hard hitting, hard recoiling round, most shooters go to .45acp or 9mm.
Perhaps you have been following the FBI's recent abandonment of the 40S&W to the 9mm.

I hear you...it's sure been a long debate...just calling it how I have seen it...and I agree with you in some part...just never found or believed it was an outdated round...imho I hope it runs forever...that said...I'm never parting with my .45 Sti..for 9mm I'm a confirmed Cz fan...enjoy

Maybe you are just limp wristed and a little whimpy.

And no 155 165 are not the best. I use 200 and 185 as minor and makes the 9mm feel like a donkey kick.

I have also seen cops shoot and what the FBI does is irrelevant. They probably need the extra rounds since most service guns suck. Most engagement with police have massive amount of bullets fired. Most if will be misses.

Ever watch a RCMP shoot.*roll eyes*. Well they might as well arm them with watermelons and make all engagements with Barn walls.

Daaaaaammm that's harsh...everyone is welcome to their opinion...

Sorry but I beg to differ, lighter recoil is the main reason that just about everyone shooting ipsc standard and classic divisions and USPSA single stack and limited divisions prefer the .40 over the .45 and the 180 is the most popular due to the fact that the 155 and 165 take more powder to make power factor which increases recoil.

BTW for anyone that doesnt think 1911's in .40 run well, everything in IPSC classic and USPSA single stack must be a 1911 and most guns in IPSC standard and USPSA limited are double stack versions of a 1911 with the sti 2011 models being the most popular and rarely do you see anyone having issues with any of those.

Reliability in double stacks is much better.
When an 1911 does not work well you also check out magazines first.
In double stack bullets have plenty of space, in signle stack, the more bullets you load the more the first round out will come out at a downward angle.
Then the barrel feedramp has to be right, or the nose dive will jam on ramp instead of ramp picking it up.

Thats why long loads in 40 with 10mm will help (to simulate a 45s feeding pattern), as most 40 bullets have a square nose, and can come to a brutal stop when they nose dive on that ramp
