Hi, I wonder if anyone here ever did recoild comparison between 40S&W 165/180/200gr loaded to minor vs 9mm in terms of recoil? Thanks! I am thinking about ipsc standard division and wonder if it's worth a try. thanks!

The starting load for 150 to 165 gr bullets in loading pamphlet for Clays come in at about 140 PF and are very pleasant to shoot. Will cycle a G22 with factory springs as well.
Same load at 10mm length works nicely in a 1911 with a 14lb recoil spring and an edge as well.

Not in standard it's not. Scoring minor in STD div is too much of a handicap. Doing so in Classic however is viable because of the 2 extra rounds allowed for minor.

Got it. thanks mrclean, carlchevalier and TrevorF. I am still new to the game. so, purely from technical perspective, let's say while the 40 minor makes sense, would 165gr/180gr/200gr minor be better than 9mm minor in terms of recoil? assuming the related gun mods were all done correctly.

Hi cereal83, how's the slide movement compared to 9mm? a friend of mine said his try failed as his slide moved a little slow, but may be due to gun mod issues as he didn't spend enough time tweaking it.
was your experience good enough to use it in matches to have an edge over 9mm minor?

I have only used 165 in 4 minor and it's very soft shooting. I have not tried other grains.

I used a different weight recoil spring so I didn't notice the slide being too slow. For 40 major, I use a 13lbs recoil spring and for minor, I use a 11lbs recoil spring. I have shot the minor with a 13 lbs recoil spring and it still shoots the brass a respectable distance.

I've shot some 180gr 40sw minor loads from my G22 without any issues. A nice mild recoil and not snappy like a major PF load. I recently started shooting 147gr 9mm minor and it too has a mild recoil. From a cost perspective, if I'm going to shoot minor, I'll stick to my 147gr 9mm loads.

I shoot minor 180s in IDPA. 4.4gr WFS PF is about 134 or so. Its way more pleasant that 9mm. I shoot ESP. I have one gun for IDPA and USPSA.
Price between reloading 40 and 9mm at low power factor is negligible. I use Barry at $130 for 1k the coated stuff is $115 is 1k. I calculated at about 15 and 17 cents respectively.

great! thanks guys. looks like it's indeed worth a try. I am not too concern about the cost difference as once getting into IPSC, that boat has sailed already. Lol...
I am going to try all the way to 200gr with different recoil spring weights.

I use 13 Pound spring on both. I just wear them out quicker.

If you actually get a 40 cal 200 gr minor load (130PF) to work consistently, please share - I tried 6 different powders and 3 different primers and could never get consistent detonation, and therefore miserable groups.
There's so little powder in the space - it would never fully burn.
After an internet search, I didn't find anything out there that conflicted with my experience.

Sure thing!

Hi, Which 6 powders you tested? have you tried longshot? I had good luck with it before. @5gr, with 180gr bullet, it runs very soft and accurate in my m&p with factory recoil spring. the velocity was less than 800fps. the same load won't run in my p30l with factory spring. so, I think with reduced power spring, I might make the 200gr work in m&p

I have a nice minor power factor load with 180gr for my son to shoot his M&P in production divison. He is 12 and there is almost no muzzle flip for him. I just used the same load in my CZ TS for our local club match steel shoot and it worked well. It definitly isnt as accurate as my major power factor load but so soft shooting it is nice and quick to get into the next target.
