Not a good idea. Why would you risk damaging the rifling on your 45-70. I have a marlin 45-70 and a marlin .410 and have been told that I can shoot 45 long colt out of the .410
I don't plan on trying that either.

Many of the .410 single shots are listed as .410/45colt. If it is listed as such, you are good.
How would this damage the rifling?

I've read that shooting.410 shotshells out of any 45-70 is perfectly safe. Tests with rifled shotgun barrels do show that there tends to be a hole in the middle of shot patterns however, so you'd have to test out your rig. No way I see a .410 shotshell damaging a 45-70, BTW. Just look and the pressure levels, and you're shooting soft lead shot too!
I have fired 2.5" .410 shells out of my Marlin 1895 GS. I loaded the shells through the breach and the extractors pulled them out after they were fired.
Haven't shot any grouse with it yet but would try to keep the shots under 10 yards.

My first shotgun as a kid was a Iver Johnson 410 and the farmer that gave it to me told me he used to shoot 44-40 or 45 out of it.... Can't remember now... Makes me wonder about shooting pistol rounds out of my winchester 94/10 though......
A shotshell will never damage a rifle bore but you will never get any kind of a decent pattern shooting small shotshells through a rifled bore. It is a waste of time and money and until you clean the rifle bore after shooting shot through it, accuracy of the rifle will probably be affected as well. Many years ago I did some testing and the patterns all had a spiral pattern with huge open spots. Shoot at a close grouse on the ground and you could see "dust" all around him and they always flew away... I tried .44 magnum and .22 LR. I did not try a .410.

But can you shoot 45 LC or 44 through a 410 bore?
here's what i meant by do the math- bullet diameter of 45 colt( no such thing as long colt) is 451, 454 for the older ones- bullet diameter of the 44 mag is 429-431- the diameter of the 410 shotgun is 410- 410 caliber- so the answer is an EMPHATIC NO- if you walk away from this with only a bulged barrel, consider yourself LUCKY

I have done the same many times. Does exactly what I want it to do, kill grouse.
