Have you shot many squirrels? They live in the trees so where do you shoot em? You guessed it in the trees. As for these guys shooting in the sky have you been out on opening day deer hunting? It is like a war zone. This year from light to 10 am I heard around 100 shots. Lots of guys were shooting 5-10 shots in a row. Hell there is a lot of cows, horses, buildings that end up with a hole in them as well.

No, i haven't, cause we don't have many here - not like Ontario, at least.

However, your argument that it's ok because there's other retards out on opening day of deer season is a very poor one. Despite what your mamma forgot to teach you, two wrongs DO NOT make a right. Solid projectiles, even .22LR, fired into the air with no backstop is dumb.

To me a .410 is a great choice for shooting anything "up".

Shoot squirrel hit squirrel and done. Now if you are trying to shoot a deer and hit someones cow 300 yards in the other direction that is a different story.
Have you sever seen what they use in the usa for squirrels in the trees? 22lr 17mach v how many reports of other things dying do you hear about??

Ok. I'll agree to grossly disagree with you, just stay the F away from any trees within 3km of me, or my family, including my Mom.

I know of several stories of bullet holes in houses growing up as a kid. It does happen, and your ignorant, arrogant and dangerous to say otherwise.

Bright orange just isn't enough. During early moose season I heard a few mag dumps (lost count of the shots) so I went to the area and seen a moose hightailing it out of there and 3 trucks on the road. They were still shooting and yelling. Who knows what was behind the moose. I am sure they didn't.

oh yeah, I see similar insanity around here.

Fact is, in my experience anyway ... high percentage of hunters can't shoot worth a damn. As for hunting ethics/safety/responsibility ...... seems to be taking a back seat as well with too many.

Ya from what I see on the range the day before opening day lots of guys shoot a few boxes trying to "zero" their gun. When they call it good there is 40 holes all over the target except in the middle.

I believe it has more to do with the type of "hunters" that are now taking up the sport. When I started hunting at age 12, families hunted together and a youngster was taught firearms safety and how to hunt at a young age by his/her father, uncle or grandfather. Today, there are more and more people getting into hunting at older ages with no background in firearms safety, and nobody to teach them, other than the PAL course which teaches them very little. The result is that we have people running around committing unsafe acts, because they don't know any better, and because of today;s society, many of them just don't care.

Anyone care to posit why the 410 became the go-to smallbore shotgun, and not the 28ga? It seems many people have zero use for a 410, yet the 28 is the perfect grouse gun or whatever. Reasons??

They also have to take hunter safety courses. I dont know wtf they are teaching in Ontario, but I've yet to see any of the sort of crap you guys talk about here. And in 3 years of hunting I've never heard a mag dump. Im not sure if I've heard 3 shots in quick succession even...

I have heard three quick shots many times both big game hunting and bird hunting. I was actually struck with pellets when loading my gear into the truck after a pheasant hunt this fall. I was in the designated parking lot at a release site, and some idiot shot right down the road into the parking lot, when trying to shoot a pheasant that was running up the road.

As for why the 28 gauge isn't more popular, I believe that it is seen as being too close to the 20 gauge by many people.
 
As an Ontarian, I blame the "mag dumps" on deer drives....... way too many people take part in them without having practiced on moving targets...... not to mention, like stubblejumper says, their rifles arent properly zeroed to begin with (a plague across the country)....

I assume 9/10 times when I am sitting watch and hear a mag dump that the deer is alive and well and hopefully headed my way.....

We assume the same when hunting pheasants, when we hear three shots or more, we look towards the shots, and usually see a pheasant flying away. I followed one set of man tracks in the snow at one site, and found four batches of three empty shotshell hulls in the snow, and I never saw any sign of a pheasant being killed. We have a limit of two pheasants per day in Alberta, so even if he did get his two birds, which is doubtful, it took him twelve shots to do it.

I disagree with that completely. I am 36 and took up hunting three years ago. My Dad didn't hunt so I took up hunting on my own and am self taught. I don't take shots when I can't see the backstop and I don't truck hunt and mag dump on a deer. I took Hunter Safety and challenged my PAL and RPAL. I would wager that most the idiots you are describing have hunted with their Dad or someone else who has next to no ethics too, that is where it is learned. Some other people are just idiots and having a gun in their hands doesn't make them any less idiotic.

man ... the things I've seen around here for zeroing ....

I don't expect the average hunter to know the kind of things I do about zeroing, however ... you gotta have the most basic clue as to why your rifle is shooting hard left and what to do about it. Very scary things go on in gravel pits around here .

Of course there are always exceptions, but I have seen many people that handle firearms in a manner that I don't consider safe, and in many cases, it's a matter of not being familiar with firearms, because they have no background in handling firearms. The Alberta Hunter safety course can be taken online, and in many cases, the PAL course is a joke in that people are passed just to push them through and collect their money. The hands on firearms handling in the course is only a few minutes, so it doesn't help the students much at all. As far as taking unwise shots while hunting, it's often a case of new hunters getting excited, and not even noticing a potential hazard, and if they are alone or with other new hunters, they often walk away from the situation without ever realizing what they did. As to the trespassing and poaching, and shooting up signs and private property, that is nothing to do with education or experience, it is simply a case of self entitled idiots that have no respect for private property, other people or the regulations.
