One advantage to trail hunting with a .410 over a .22 is 7 1/2 shot doesn't travel nearly as far.
From a monetary perspective, it does make sense to go 20 gauge. .410 shells do cost more.
I wouldn't underestimate how effective a .410 can be though. The last time I shot trap on the Andy Wood Memorial Range, I shot a round with a Winchester 101 in .410 and went 23/25.
I never said it wasn't effective...for guys like you and I! I actually shoot 3/4oz loads out of my 12ga. 870 for doubles and out as far as the 20 yard line...but it isn't the load or gun I would have a new shooter or kid start with either.
"Know your target and what is beyond" applies in every hunting scenario so when you follow that rule (and everybody should) a .22 is no more dangerous that any other firearm.
If you shot at the Athabasca club it was before I showed up there or it was during one of the registered shoots I missed because believe me I would have remembered that...and probably borrowed your gun and paid you for your ammo to shoot a round! Lol! PM me if you haven't been up here in a while or if you aren't on our mail out list and I'll send you a 2013 shoot book once they are printed.
