410

One advantage to trail hunting with a .410 over a .22 is 7 1/2 shot doesn't travel nearly as far.
From a monetary perspective, it does make sense to go 20 gauge. .410 shells do cost more.
I wouldn't underestimate how effective a .410 can be though. The last time I shot trap on the Andy Wood Memorial Range, I shot a round with a Winchester 101 in .410 and went 23/25.

I never said it wasn't effective...for guys like you and I! I actually shoot 3/4oz loads out of my 12ga. 870 for doubles and out as far as the 20 yard line...but it isn't the load or gun I would have a new shooter or kid start with either.

"Know your target and what is beyond" applies in every hunting scenario so when you follow that rule (and everybody should) a .22 is no more dangerous that any other firearm.

If you shot at the Athabasca club it was before I showed up there or it was during one of the registered shoots I missed because believe me I would have remembered that...and probably borrowed your gun and paid you for your ammo to shoot a round! Lol! PM me if you haven't been up here in a while or if you aren't on our mail out list and I'll send you a 2013 shoot book once they are printed.

Ok sounds like maybe 20 gauge is what i want i have an old12 gauge i would use so whats a fair price on a decent used 20 gauge i dont care if its old so long as its in workable condition????? I dont have access to the exchange yet so i havent brosed......

Ya i dont think thats an option right now even a couple 410s for 250??? I dont know what they go for i mean the kids arent gun shy thats for sure just want them to have the best odds to get some and have fun ......

If you reload shotgun ammo or maybe know someone who does...I might have a 16 gauge Ithaca M37 pump action I could send your way for less than $200...but there would be one condition attached to it! PM me if you want. Offer doesn't apply to anyone but the OP!!!

Wish I could help but have nothing left in that price range most of the 75-150 dollar guns go quick locally and never make the EE.. I think you will be hard pressed to find even two small bore single shot cooeys for less than 350-400 if they have to be shipped. Will keep an eye out however for you once I can see clearly again.:)
Doc says I will be alright with a few weeks rest and to stop engaging with the professional 410 trap shooters and ground swatters here.
Took quite a pounding yesterday ;);)

Ha! Those guys can be awfully tough...

If that's really you, get well soon. What the hell really happened?

Na that is not me just a pic I found. Just trying to lighten things up.:) The old gunnutz site has been pretty rough since that shooting in the US and never seen so many fights. Can understand since one would have to be a fool not to think we would not be effected eventually. That being said eating each other is just playing into the anti's hands. We all have our experiences and opinions from them which is fine and have to respect that. F'K being a yank my old man shot in the grand in Vandalia in the 60's I sure hope I retained a little bit of what he tried to pound in my head as far as shotgunning not saying it was right but it sure worked for him and many others. I can only dream to shoot like he did and it was not from lack of trying or trigger time. Some guys are just born to shoot it seems. He would drive me nuts you shot behind??How do you know that??Did you not see the shot string??AHH NOPE.;) Hope there is a little bit of fact in what I remember and try to share.. take care :)

.410s are fine, I would actually say that my .410 gets more game, in terms of headcount, than anything else I have. I would never consider getting rid of it.

I have a belgian double barrel with exposed hammers that I traded a mossberg 12 gauge for. An excellent trade imho.

Nothing wrong with 20 or 28 gauge either.

I recommend trying everything you can to see what you like best. It's all good experience.

There are very few 'one size fits all' solutions. I wouldn't bother wasting time looking for one. Just think of that top 10 reasons why guys like guns so called joke.

Regarding the sharp kick comment, I have cooey single shots in 410 and 28 gauge. Shooting on a farm a few years ago, after working on a .22 single shot for a while, the 8 year old boy and 10 year old girl I was teaching both wimpered after shooting one shot with the 28 gauge. the 410 on the other hand, they could handle and loved shooting. There is a noticeable difference in kick between the two in a similar gun. Coupled with a too longer stock, the 28 was unpleasant to shoot for these small kids.

Since the OP was asking about early teens that are not recoil shy, the 410 is not necessary. The 28 or 20 single shots would be better. I would recommend a shortened (if necessary), lightly loaded 20 gauge single shot with a good recoil pad, just because ammo is cheaper and easier to get.
As it turns out, my first gun as a young teen was a 20 gauge cooey. I could handle it, but the kick was significant. It was great for hunting around the farm.

I was given a 410 and before I did anything else, I got my wife to draw a realistic looking and accurately sized grouse silhouette on pieces of cardboard and took those to the range and patterned the gun at various realistic ranges, but mostly at 25 yards.

That's for ground sluicing. I don't think I'd wing shoot with it, but actually, I've kind of gone off grouse anyway, except for the big blues.

Too much work for what you get and I feel sorry for the little buggers anyway.

I think the limit on Spruce grouse should be cut way back. We're going to hunt them to extinction. There's already hardly any sharptailed grouse left in B.C.

last week i bring 2 of my daugthers to fire some 410 shells... my 6 1/2 year had alot of fun and she said recoil is not that bad but she found my 223 too much for her... YET...
she wanted to try my 12 and 10ga but she said she'll wait a couple more year...

i holded the gun so my 2 1/2 years shot as well but she didnt liked the noise ,scare daddy scare, but she shot another round and she didnt said that was hurting...
my 4 1/2 is scared about the noise even the 410 noise so she didnt wanted to try it out....

maybe 22lg this summer...

Can you guys still find ammo for the 28 gauge out east? I've only found it out west here at the Cabela's in Edmonton and it was made by Challenger. Other than that it is indeed a reloader's proposition. I had a sweet little Franchi 48 AL that I stupidly sold not long after moving out here!

Gagnon sports in Oshawa has piles of the stuff.

My local Coop brings my Winchester AA 28 ga target loads in with a pallet of 12 ga, $9.00 per box, and the hulls are excellent quality for reloading, I do that too.

Been 15 years since I have found them that cheap down this way. I would be spending a few bucks I think if I was close to your coop.
Best I can find here and put 15% tax on top of the below prices
28ga Win AA HS $15.99 per box $129.99 per case

I started shotgunning when I was 12. My dad had picked up an older Stevens 58 Bolt gun in 20g. ( Factory polychoke installed on the end of the barrel)

Over the years I've used it to take a fair share of rabbit, spruce grouse, and ducks. It was a simple gun, with a reasonably light kick.

It's still in my gun safe, and still is my gun for walking the roads on Fall afternoons. It will be the gun I teach my son on.

my $.02
