44 mag -what are my options?

What are my options (used, obviously?) For a S&W revolver in 44 mag with no internal lock and a barrel under 6"?

Ideally something blued with a halflug.

Also has to be restricted...

Anyone know what the possibilities are?
 
-Have a longer barrel shortened.
-Find a nominally 4" gun that has been verified as having a non-12(6) barrel length.
 
29s and 629s have been made with full lugged 5" barrels. S&W made some Model 29s with a 5" half lug barrel and there were a few were re-barreled by the factory, but they are extremely rare.
 
A blued Model 29 with a 5" half lug would be my dream revolver... sounds like I may never see one come up for sale though (?).
 
Ruger Redhawk with 4.2" barrel. Apparently no issues with quality, unlike the 4.2" 629 I just had the pleasure of not buying.
 
Top reasons I will never own a ruger:

1) I prefer my owners manuals on paper, not written across the barrel.
2) Bill Ruger supported the 1994 AWB by bargaining such that the mini 14 would be exempted. He threw his competitors under the Clinton bus.
3) I am sick of CAS competitors telling me how the single six meets the spirit of that sport when colt pattern guns are available which exactly duplicate history.
 
You have 3 choices.
1. S&W 29-2 6 1/2'' and Down

2. 629 Classic in a 5''

3. If you decide to chop one and decide on keeping it that your choice but the value will be lost thats the only downside.

As for 29 in a 5'' barrel they the factory produced about 500 barrels back in 1958 then again in 1990-1994 but try to find one that the hard part but would be nice forsure.

Most 44 now are around the 1K area whether its new or used and the olders ones rule in my book ..

I have a Ruger Redhawk in SS and 5.5 inch barrel...Love it.

Frankly, I can live with a full lug as well, but I really want to avoid the internal lock on a high-recoil firearm. On my 686 it's a non-issue, but supposedly it can sometimes accidentally ingage on full-power 44's according to many US internet sources.

What are the full underlug options?

PS: Yes, I'm aware I'll be about $1000 out of pocket (perhaps more).
 
As far as stampings go on my revolver I could care less...What's important to me is that it goes bang every time very hard...and when I run out of ammo I can use it as a club lol

Yep and I understand that completely...If I'd been able to pick up a Smith .44 for the same price as the Ruger I would have however it was not meant to be. The gent I bought this from does have a Smith in .44 however I'm not sure what model or the price only it was above seven hundred. I wear a Smith hat and a Ruger hat lol

And since Jesus was never a cowboy, you should be looking at the 4.2" RR.

Or unless you meant "...since Jesus was working in the fields." In which case you have always been a S&W man :kickInTheNuts:

Oh god... please do NOT turn this into a bear defence thread!!! The gun is for range use in Ontario, not remote woods carry in BC.
 
I think buying Taurus Raging Bull 44 mag for shooting into space is cheaper and reliable solution.

Now... if you hit any bears in the space, there is no telling if 44 mag will have enough stopping power. :ninja:
