9gr gets me right around 1000fps.
I know you don't have it, but if you're bored one day, fill a few cases up to where the bullet base will be with IMR7828 powder + 240 grain slug. You'll get a ridiculously slow 495fps and it'll kick like a 22LR. Don't even bother trying to get them to go over 50 yards. Even at that range, it's more like bombing than shooting. They just bounce off a target backer made of 1/2" OSB.

The very nice people at Aliant make PROMO powder in bulk packages. 8 pounds only. PROMO is just like RedDot, only better and cheaper.
A very nice load I use in 44 mag cases is 5.5 grains of PROMO with a 205 or a 240 grain cast lead bullet.
I also have some 180 or 190 grain full wadd cutter lead bullets that work with the same load.

A real comfortable load I use in my Ruger Bisley Hunter for Bullseye target at the range is 5 grains of Bullseye under 240 grains LSWC. I find it very accurate and easy to shoot at 25 yards. Been using this for a couple of years.
I'll wholeheartedly agree, although I haven't loaded under 7 grains yet. For relaxing shooting on a 25 yd range I don't need fullhouse loads. My 24 yr old daughter has come into the fold, as it were, and finds the recoil inconsequential as do other shooters new to the 44 mag.
Yes 30.0 grs of H110 behind a 180gr bullet does shake the fillings loose!
H110 is not conducive to reduced loads, but Unique and Trail Boss are excellent. You need to get some cast bullets - the plain based Keith 250 gr for plinking, and a gas-checked 325 gr or so for up to full-house loads.

Unique seems to be less smoky and doesn't leave a residue. But we have good positive down-wind ventilation at our range. Smoke gets sucked downrange from the shooting stations and then upwards pretty quick...

I find it pretty smokey in lighter loads, not offensive or anything just gives more of a cowboy action kind of feel. Residue is more than say universal or H110, which my 44 also eats. I have not used 231 yet, so a complete comparison can't be made.
7.8 gr if Trail Boss behind a 240gr LSWC is nice and quiet, and soft recoiling. No idea what the MV is, but it's definitely subsonic. It feels like a 22lr; similar ballistics and a noticeable delay between the report and the impact at 100 yards. Despite the exceptionally low recoil, they still smack a big gong around with authority.
Accuracy and overall handling seems about the same as a 22lr, and the fun factor is large.
