44mag or .30-.30 which would you use?

.44!!! Seriously, I have nothing against the 30/30, but I love...L-O-V-E my .44 carbine. My gun shoots 1" at 100,, but there's something satisfying about the WUMP! that happens when a 240 JSP smacks into a deer.
That gun has taken more deer/bears than all of my other rifles combined.

If its the semi auto ruger carbine (not the leaver gun )that friggin crossbolt saftey is a pain in the awse for us lefty type folks.Why and the hell ruger would not have put the garand type saftey on these when the re introed them is beyond me.I guess a gunsmith could make the rifle a left guy crossbolt safty.
I pack a Marlin 1894 in .44 mag in the bush "just in case", loaded with 265 gr Hornady FP behind H110. (Hard cast would also be good, as I'm sure Ben Hunchak will jump in and mention before long!) I've never had to use it but, as others have said, there is something intrinsically comforting about the "whump" from that big slug.
That being said, the .30-30 has been around since God was in short pants and as every experiened hunter knows, bullet placement is more important than the calibre, assuming the calibre is basically up to the job.
I do agree about the crossbolt safey, though. Nice in theory but often a pain in practice.

Both cartridges are excellent in thick stuff.
The 30-30 has an edge if you get a more open oportunity.
I think it comes down to which rifle you are most competent with, and confedent in.

No casty in the semi....uhuh Clog port..There aint enough baroomba in either for this kid. I rate my 44 as a 50 yd brush buster...I wont own a thuddy thuddy. That being said if I had to choose on the two the 45/70 would be it, oh sorry I meant 44

50 is limiting thhis cartridge. My .44 shoots an honest 1.25 @ 100 (winchester white-box) and just last year dropped a big bear sow at 119 yds (lasered) with one shot. I wouldn't push this cart. much further than that, but I have the proof that its 120 yd gun posted in the "big game photo's" section

I have no doubt,but when I choose a cartridge its not by will it kill any animal in the area with reasonable assurance. Its rather by the rational that the cartridge and the distance I've used it to are such that after I pull the trigger I just have a seat and wait. Maybe two seconds,maybe 30 seconds, but the clumsy crashes are sure to follow. Since I started hunting vastly overpowered for the game the kills are far more consistant...
1) A big gun is just that.Theres less compensation for distance,lead,etc
2) As Mr. Oconnor said,"A big gun will turn a bad shot good"
3) recovery time forces you to use big guns as single shots thusly waiting for that perfect shot as opposed to blasting...I'll be honest ,when I used to hunt birds my counts on jump shoot days were higher with my single shot than later on when I got a semi
I'm a little off topic,but as a rule I tend to use twice the gun req'd

The point is that a bad shot, is a bad shot, regardlesss of the cartridge used.

Both ok, the 30-30 is better for off the shelf stuff, and does pretty good with barnes x , and Nosler Partition bullets.
The 44 mag has a wider surface which will hit hard, but get it where it counts , cause the animal will soak it up and take off.
My pick 30-30 , excellent brush caliber.

Once again a bad shot turned better by shear force...Big guns kill big animals but they also kill smaller ones better...I'll illustrate blatenly now...When its my time to go,rather than looking for just the right spot to place 177 pellets,Id rather you were a little clumsy with a nyati or lott, if its all the same
