44mag or .30-.30 which would you use?

.44 Mag vs. .30-30 in a Trapper?

Make mine a .30-30 Win please. Those 170 grain flatpoints will take anything with plenty of smack at bush rifle ranges... ;)

Why would not wait till a better shot presented itself:confused:
Then there would be no bad shot made good argument, it would all be good....would'nt it:D
My vote still goes for the thuddy-thuddy:)

X2

Ummm...if it didn't know you were there, why would you take the lowest percentage shot avaiable?
Real easy to deflect off the hip, and do #### all but put a hole in the deer (as it runs FAR away)
Deer don't stay put THAT long...for christs sake, give a squeak or just friggin wait...a better shot will present. And if it doesn't? Oh well...I'd let it go first. I wouldn't give a #### if I was using my RUM, I won't shoot a deer in the ass (unless it's hit/wounded allready)

Geeze....and people wonder why hunters get a bad name. Sometimes I just shake my head.

I've done the same thing with a cast bullet from my 30-30, except that the exit was out the chest.
Bang flop.
Your point?
If you blow the leg off a deer with a 45-70, it's no different than the same with a 30-30.
I have no urge to repeat the O'Connor arguement. I like big bores myself. Besides, Jack is supposed to have won the arguement in favour of small bores.
The 30-30, and 45-70 are among my favorite hunting cartridges. I've used both extensively with many types of bullets, on a pile of deer.
I've also used the 338WM and the 270. They waste meat.
I've also trailed more than a few wounded deer from all sorts of cartridges. A bad shot, is a bad shot.

Its not as bad with a big gun...Big holes up your chances...once again under the microscope we go. Please wound me in the foot with a 22 as opposed to a rocket launcher..I should put it this way. Big guns make a bad shot less bad..I've seen it to many times, for any more quoting to work on me. And as for meat wastage of calibers. There no greater waste than even taking a chance at wasting the whole thing cause you dont find it

Blindside + big gun = DUNCE

Seems to me you might think its ok to take a risky shot if you carry a big gun.I think not.Pass it up and try again tomorrow.

Lets magnify it to extremes of ease of viewing............This year I shot a buck that had no idea we were there(head down) 45/70 420 gr hard cast between the tail and the anus,............again a bad shot turned better by shear force

Blindside,

I hunt with a 375 H&H most of the time and even though I know the 375 is able to handle it, I would not take this shot, but rather wait until the deer turned.

Why did you take this shot when the deer was undisturbed?

Ted

If it makes the little fella feel good to carry a big gun its OK.

But if you think its fine to take a chitty shot just because you got a big gun.THATS NOT OK

Face it Blindside ... your big gun is not the issue here. Your role, no, responsibility as an ethical hunter is to take game humanely. It's no joke to shoot a deer in the ass, and I fear you've probably had a lot of good chuckles over this with your buddies. Half of them will silently despise you and the other half will be turning into bubbas like you.

This is no pissing match between you and a few on this thread. It's what makes good hunters good, and bad hunters bad. I hope you get you head turned in the right direction and don't go "blindsiding" any more animals the way you describe again.

AS to the bush gun question, I'd take a .30-30 cuz I got two, one scoped and other peep sight ... a bit more range than the .44 esp with leverevolution cartidges. I'd take a .44 though if I had one. Not much diff.

Holy frig I just noticed your location. We're buddies and you call me names like that....UH UH UH UH

You worry about a shot in the ass cause with your gun/ammo combination you figure theres only limited ways to the vitals....Thats your call and mine is mine." Man's got to know his limitations"

I could toss a stone and hit you from where i am.LOL.
Still think takin risky shots with any caliber is a no no.A GUT SHOT IS STILL A GUT SHOT.Bad shot by mistake can be excused.

MAYBE YOUR NOT A DUNCE.Dont take it personal.

My 375 H&H is plenty and I am still wondering..........................

Why did you take this shot when the deer was undisturbed?
