This year I shot a buck that had no idea we were there(head down) 45/70 420 gr hard cast between the tail and the anus, the entire length of the spine, out the chest, under the jaw,out the top of the head. That was a bad shot made good.
I've done the same thing with a cast bullet from my 30-30, except that the exit was out the chest.
Bang flop.
Your point?
If you blow the leg off a deer with a 45-70, it's no different than the same with a 30-30.
I have no urge to repeat the O'Connor arguement. I like big bores myself. Besides, Jack is supposed to have won the arguement in favour of small bores.
The 30-30, and 45-70 are among my favorite hunting cartridges. I've used both extensively with many types of bullets, on a pile of deer.
I've also used the 338WM and the 270. They waste meat.
I've also trailed more than a few wounded deer from all sorts of cartridges. A bad shot, is a bad shot.
