45-70 Fun

Never had my arm get battered up like that, but have had my shoulder get tender and turn some interesting colours in the past.

The worst experience was doing load development where I fired 50 rounds of blazing hot reloads through my Marlin 1895 topped with the 325 gr FTX, so still not terrible. The only other one of mention is a box of Barnes factory stuff that resembles what I like to refer to as a "flying shot glass". 10 rounds of that stuff and I saw what I needed to and put the rifle away for the day.

I shoot a 4570 double rifle thats based on a shotgun frame of which i also own so its the closest comparison of 4570 vs 12ga. I load 405gr bullets to 1600fps which is the upper end loading for low pressure guns. A 1 1/8oz factory slug has more recoil than my loads. Stepoing up to factory levereverultion hornady 4570 loads recoil feels about the same as a hot loaded slug from a 12ga.
As you load higher pressures in the 4570 it will definitely feel sharper and harder recoil.
I have yet to shoot a 4570 load that woukd compare to a 2oz 12ga turkey load though. Those to me feel like my 458wm territory of recoil
Bicep brusing is from not holding the rifle correctly. You dont bruise where you dont get hit. The 4570 is an easy rifle to master even though at ruger #1 loads it does generate alot of recoil

This is exactly as my experience as well. 325 lever revolution packs a punch. Quite similar to a shotgun with slugs. Not as snappy as my 300 rum with 200 grain bullets but you know your shooting a big bore for sure.

I have (3) 45-70's -

1883 Springfield Trapdoor - shoot BPCR exclusively load is a 405g lead bullet over 55g black powder (volume)
Navy Arms Rolling Block ( Remington) - currently shooting 405g coated bullets over 55g Triple 7 (volume)
Uberti 1885 Falling Block ( Winchester ) - currently shooting 500g coated bullet over 45g Triple 7 (volume)*

* It's all I can fit in the case.

I've never had any damage like that, usually shoot between 50-100 rounds on a given day.

I have two Winchester 1892 44 magnums with crescent steel butt plates. Off hand it isn’t too bad. From the bench, it’s downright nasty to shoot. Much worse than 12 gauge or 30-06.
And that’s 240 gr pistol caliber...
