45/70 Guide gun

^ lol thanks...often I post garbled #### that is almost unreadable.. For the DRC lever wheres a good source in Canada? Or this online from the US stuff? Ive shot several levers but not in 45/70, always found the levers small for the hand. That DRC looks nice.

Hey USP,

I have been thinking about buying a Guide Gun for some time. Since you are new to it I would like to hear your thoughts after you shoot it. I have no use for this rifle but for some reason I feel that I must have one. I must be a gunnut..............:runaway:

I picked one up a couple of months ago. You will want to replace the lever and the trigger as soon as possible. The lever is too small for big hands or gloves. The trigger has the standard Marlin flop.

With the right ammo it is lighter than a 12 gauge. I have used leverevolution but found that 350 gr fp jackets with a light load of powder are good for the range. Just make sure you reset you sights with the ammo you intend to hunt with.

As a guy who just bought a guide gun, and just recently shot it, here are my thoughts: it's a fun little niche gun, and the recoil is a non-issue if you are used to shooting heavy shotgun loads or play around with anything in the 338-358-375 range. My 300 gr 375 loads kick WAY more than this little guide gun, so I quite enjoy shooting it.

I can't comment on accuracy, as I was using the iron sights, and I'm not the most consistant when it comes to those. I'll put a scope on it one day just to see what it's capable of; others can comment on their groups.

It is rather loud though.

55 grs. of RL-7 or 57.5 grains of AA2015 will give you 2000fps from a 24" bl. with a hardcast 420gr LFN GC, at the same pressure levels as the .450 marlin factory ammo. Adjust downward for less recoil and more fun!

Ben............you're a crazy mother. You're only supposed to load those kind up for your friends to try.:cool: I don't know about you but I can only handle about 8 of those and my shoulder is done.

Yeah it arrived today!! I got a box of rounds to try out. Ive wanted to buy this thing for along time, sort of seems like the assault rifle of the wild west, plus the cartridge 45/70 Government just seems to have alot of good history behind it. In person the gun is very small and light. Finish is good, stock is a nice wood, although darker in person than the Marlin website. Ill post some info after I shoot it. Agreed on the comments above on the trigger, it appears to have alittle creep and slop...but probably not excessive enough to make it a bad shooter.

Put 40 rnds through my 450 marlin today(twin to the 45/70). Shot some factory hornady/350gr, some handload (3031 & 350gr H), and a couple hanldoad 400gr Hawk.
More of a "push", than a sharp kick like a 300 or a 12 ga in my feeling.
You're gonna love it.
Think the biggest expense is going to be targets and plywood. Big holes.

is the factory pad pretty crappy? How is the recoil on this gun? Would you rate it less than say 3inch magnum slug from a 12 gauge? Is the factory pad held on my two screws?

Yes it's crap, if you reload like me it's crap... Too hard, go to Pachmayr Decelerator...

Here's my guide gun.

XS sights, Pachmayr Decelerator.over sized lever, para cord wrapped, and Forget the butt stock shell holder..

Yeah I ordered a Browning Horsehair sling..better be nice. THe leather you have on yours is some nice stuff. that guys website has some great work on it.

I too must have one of these rifles someday.
My buddy just got one and I can't wait to try it out-- 45/70 very, very cool... very, very big holes. :D
I'm thinking just as good or better than 12G slugs for bear defense.

Yeah its a really small rifle, looks bigger in the pics, I can see why people think its so handy.

I like my H&R 500 S&W for doing big holes. I can load up some 700 gr cast bullets, np.

I also like the 440 gr bullets travelling at 1980 fps.

:D
