Im ready to load for my Marlin 1895 GBL. I got 200 new starline brass, 200 405gr SLG hard cast bullets, 200 390gr hard cast gas checked bullets and 200 405gr remington jsp. what is everyone using out there.
im going to use IMR4064 with the 405gr hardcast bullets and im going to load them at trapdoor speeds. i want to use 390gr hardcast GC bullets with IMR3031 for bear defense. anyone use these combos

I'm sure you check the load data but my own experience with 3031 and 4064 suggests that the trapdoor loads would be 3031 and the "bear defense" shoulder thumper stuff would use the 4064. Mind you that feeling is driven by the idea that I've used 4064 for my full power jacketed .30-30 and 7mm-08 loading in the past.

3031 and 4198 are often given as good powders for reduced velocity/low pressure loads.

I have the same Rifle , I have experminted 4064 and 3031 , I have setteled on IMR 4198 with the 405 Sp Rem bullet , I get the best accuracy and velocitys with 4198 , there is a lot of good loading info in the net using 4198 for the 45/70 ,have fun

I'm using 4198 for my 100m plinking loads in a High Wall. 405gr HC bullets that I'm making seem to like the load - open sights and two inch ten-shot groups tell me so. Gentle on the ould shoulder, too.

I've found that H-4198 works well for light loads right up to max loads. For light loads I've found that a magnum primer helps.

IMR-3031 is a great powder for the .45-70 too though. Reloder 7, if you can find any, gives good velocity at moderate pressures.

I use 3031 and Varget for medium to heavy loads with bullets in the 340 gr - 405 gr range.

I haven't been using 4064, since I had none on hand and already had the 3031 and Varget anyways. The 45-70 is not fussy to reload for, though.

For bear defense I would actually reccomend a lighter (300 - 340 grain) bullet going faster (Notably over 2000 fps). Bigger/slower are fine for breaking bone and CNS hits, but will not generate any hydrostatic shock. A lighter bullet will still penetrate far more than you ever need, but if pushed hard can also get you some shock value, for when you don't tag the spine or something with a direct hit. Inexpensive Remingon 300gr HP's, pushed to over 2200 fps for example, is what I would go with for bear defense.

I will stick with 405 grain bullets traveling around 1750fps for bear defense. It hit redonkously hard!

For trap door Velocities, I use a 420 grain cast bullet, with 26.0 grains of IMR SR 4759, + a dacron wad to hold powder in place.
This gives me around 1475-1500fps. It shoots around 1-1/4" at 100, and hits with significant authority!

With little 26.0 grain charges, the powder lasts for. A loongggg time!

I use a 3031 max load for 500 grain jacketed bullet, behind a 500 grain cast bullet in my siamese mauser, I get about 1860 fps, and it is dangerous on both ends...

I use 3031 for 350 Hornady rn and also for Speer 405. 2150 and 1950 fps respectively in a new marlin 22" lever. Both loads are at max and the 405 pops the lever once in a while from recoil. Both are very accurate and hurt on both ends. Both loads are north of 50 grains of powder

im going to be loading up some 500gr hardcast gas checked bullets for my marlin gbl. ive loaded up some 390gr gas checked with great results using IMR3031. what would you or are you using for powder with heavy bullets

I just got my Marlin SBL about a month ago(I really like the ghost ring sights). I picked up some trailboss for plinking rounds (I use it for 45 colt too). 13 grs and a 405 cast bullet from the bullet barn makes for cheap fun plinking. I am also loading up 350 gr Hornady JSP's with 54 grs Varget to start with (I have 10 pounds and no .308's anymore). I will be upping that (I think 60 is listed as the max). But I love this gun (and caliber I may have to get another one) That with my new 45LC Redhawk which I am taking out to fire for the first time today, and life is good.
