45-70 reloading

HI Mike:
I have 2 45-70's
A Marlin model 1895
And a Baikal Double rifle.
Start low when you reload to get use to the recoil.
If you go full loads your 45-70 will be for sale very quick.
I make light loads for practice and save the thumpers when I mean business.

I'm already loadin it at full loads. Recoil doesn't bother me. I trying to see what powder mat work good with 500gr bullets

I like IMR 3031 with Remington 405 jacketed bullets, 46 grains gives me all the power I can handle in my guide gun, at over 1500FPS. 405 grain plain base cast bullets get H 4198 or IMR 4198 for a nice 1300 fps plinking load.

My 500 gr hammer of thor loads use IMR 4064. I forget what the powder amount is. I have 7 45/70 bullet molds 147 gr RB up to 535 gr and load from powder puff to hammer of thor.
IMR-4064 From 43.4 grains to 55.0 grains for 500 gr bullets. taken from stevespages.co

imr3031 seems to work well (not my shooting, only bullets are mine)

33 grains of h4198 405 grain projectile will do anything you need to do with 45-70. You don't need to hammer your shoulder to "thump" a bear. Anything in the high trapdoor levels will kill anything on this continent.

I load 49 grs of varget under silver cast alloy 405 gr hard cast. I get 1550 ish fps and there's very little muzzle rise from my double.
Where is everyone finding the rem 405 gr jacketed soft nose? I'm almost out

I use Trailboss & Red Dot powders with 405 gr cast bullets for some gentle shooting that doesn't punish the shoulder. It penetrates paper real good & has also taken a few tin cans too.
Dance mother-trucker, dance....Laugh2

For hunting I use the light-weight marlin in 45 colt or 44 mag....

I just made up my first reloads for my 45-70 GBL and this is what I went with for the first batch.

Starline Brass
Federal 210 Large Rifle Primers
35 grains imr4198
Missouri Bullet Co. 405gr RNFP

Lightly crimped and C.O.L 2.54

One of my all-time favourite jacketed bullet loads for the 45-70, is one known as the "Elmer Keith" load: 53 grains IMR 3031, with 405 grain jacketed bullet. Sometimes I will substitute the same powder charge, using Varget. Been using this particular load for several decades, now. Always delivers. Accurate and hard-hitting. Naturally, your own rifle may show a preference for some other powder. But, this load combination is worth investigating. Note: This load is suitable only for strong, modern lever-action firearms, like the Marlin 1895, or Winchester 1886(plus clones). Do NOT use in trapdoor Springfields.

My 405 grain mould drops the bullets at 418gr out of my 20:1 alloy. I use 3031 to drive them at 1950 FPS out of my 1885. I got the recipe out of Pet Loads by Ken Waters. Works like a hot damn.

I'm just curious from the experienced reloaders, I to start reloading for 45-70 govt. And I wish to try and use the two powders I have (primarily reload for 233) which are I4895 and h335. I have seen load data for both of these powders in my manual, but I was just curious on your experiences with them and developing loads with them. Thanks.
