.45-70 VS .300 win

OP did say Deer & Black Bear close up, not Grizzlies.
45-70, 300WM, & most other cartridges mentioned will work fine too
Between the two, 45-70

In open areas where shots could be long some would say the 300 Win. Mag. has the advantage because of its favorable trajectory.

However, a standard speed 45-70 with a scope that has a ballistic reticle like one of the Nikons would make long range shots possible. Check out the reticle at 9x calibrated to 380 yards for Federal 45-70 300gr ammo. ;)

...45-70 bullet onto a target 4 or 5 hundred or more yards away...
Takes a heck of a rifle/load combo...

Couldn't a ballistic reticle-scoped 45-70 rifle as described above make accurate long range shooting fairly easy to do?

Why does every 45/70 thread have to turn into a diehard trying to convince everyone that it is the single greatest round ever.

Yes you can hold them hot in a number 1. But that can describe every round. Let's move on.

The 300 win is far better than a 4570 for long range.

How/why is a 300 WM better for long range shooting than a ballistic reticle-scoped 45-70?

We will just need to disagree on the practical hunting range of different cartridges.

I define them my their point blank range, without any gizmo or lines to get in the way. We're Hunting, not trying to shoot paper.

If you're willing to fill your scope with lines and whatever else, it really doesn't matter what the cartridge is. They can all be adjusted for distance.

Also... for you "buffalo" hunters using the 45/70... In the Yukon, where the bison roam, you need to meet a 2800 FPS requirement that looks a bit under what the chart someone posted says, unless I'm reading that wrong...
From the Yukon hunting regs:

Minimum Firearm Requirements for Hunting Wood Bison
XXA centre fire rifle, .30 calibre or larger, with minimum 180 grain bullets
(premium bullets strongly recommended) and minimum 2,800 ft/lb energy
at the muzzle. (A .30-06 calibre is the baseline rifle.)

So back to the OP with deer and black bear hunting... I would go with the modern cartridge.

Not only that, but trajectory plays a part as well......

It just always goes this way.

A guy asks what is better, 300 win or 4570. Just by the question alone, it's apparant he has limited knowledge of cartridges. This is ok, outside of this bubble, most hunters don't know and don't care.

But then someone needs to chime in that his 4570 reloads that are above book loads are excellent killing machines and are the greatest thing ever.

I like my 4570. But it is just a gun with limitations.

This is not about apples vs. oranges. The OP asked for opinions on shooting deer and bear "up close" between two very effective cartridges. Both calibres have limitations and the problem with the 300 Win Mag is that numerous .308 bullets may fail on impact at close ranges. I have experienced this. The 45-70 is a great performer at ranges to 150 yards but has a high arc trajectory beyond this distance. The 300 Win Mag is a top notch performer out to 3-400 yards if the shooter is competent. I shoot both and like them both! My 1885 High Wall shoots a 405 gr. bullet at 2000 FPS. and has as much energy at closer ranges as my 300 WSM.

Besides, the 45/70 is a far better conversation maker than the .300 around any campfire!

The standard 300 win mag is a far more versatile and powerful load than the standard 45-70.
I could load an extremely strong gun like a ruger #1 to the catastrophic destruction point with a super load in any caliber but what does that prove?

Next thing you know some dummy loads one of the cartridges developed for the ruger into a trapdoor and winds up wearing the gun.
