I wanted to know the diffrence between a .45 ACP and .45 Auto ammo. Well what I'm really wondering is if you can shoot a .45 Auto out of a gun that requires a .45 ACP. Now, I know you should always you the type requested on the pistol, but I got 2 boxes of .45 Auto that I can either use or sell, so I'm just curious if it can be shoot out of a .45 ACP pistol. Thanks.

Yep, .45 ACP (automatic colt pistol) and 45 auto are the same. There is, however, a 45 GAP (glock automatic pistol), which is a cartrige delevlped by glock but never took off really. It is only offered in three glock pistols and is not very common at all. 45 ACP is by far the more common 45 auto, and that is why 45 auto is considered to refer only to 45 ACP.

There is a 45 auto rim too, go to you tube and look for Revolvers that shoot automatic pistol cartridges, there is a vid that shows 45 acp and 45 auto rim, both will shoot, but with the 45 acp you will need moon clips to eject

I think springfield made an XD45 gap also. :)

yummy, 45GAP, maybe I'll snatch that glock 37 with 7 mags and 1000 gap brass on the EE:)

no money :(

.45 ACP and .45 Auto are the same thing, as mentioned.

However, ".45 Auto" and ".45 Auto Rim" are NOT. .45 Auto Rim is extremely rare in most people's necks of the woods, and it's basically .45 ACP with no 'real' extractor groove (although it does have a small groove sometimes) and an extended rim, designed for shooting in .45 ACP revolvers without moon clips. See pics below:

.45 Auto, left; .45 Auto Rim, right.

.45 Auto Rim (AR) isn't factory loaded anymore (that I know of) and hasn't been for a long time... brass can still be had from some manufacturers (Starline, I think?) but it's so 'niche' that you don't exactly see it flying off gunstore shelves since .45 Auto and some moon clips/spider clips give you basically the same cartridge.

9mm is a bit more confusing...
Here are some synonyms for 9mm:
* 9x19
* 9 mm
* 9 mm Luger
* 9 mm NATO
* 9x19mm
* 9x19mm NATO
* 9 mm Parabellum
* 9 mm Para

And for .45ACP:
* .45 Auto
* 11.43×23mm

The .45 ACP is, technically a pistol: .45 Automatic Colt's Pistol, to be precise.

.45 Automatic is the ammo that is used in a .45 ACP.

Like most everything else in language, the terms have been muddied over the years so that you often see the ammo described with terms originally meant to apply to the gun, only.

also know as the long colt
No....Arrrggg...I have never heard anyone call the 45 Scofield as a 45 "Short Colt"...You can call the 45 Scofield the 45 S&W, but using the term 45 Long Colt is akin to saying that "clips" and "mags" are the same thing....
