Hey Guys,

I know absolutely zero about reloading...and have only ever bought and shot factory ammo. I have been thinking about reading and learning about what is involved to decide if I want to get into it or not.

I realize there is more than just a cost advantage to loading your own ammo ( ... but just on the cost side of things...could you guys comment on say the ballpark difference between a new factory round of .45 ACP FMJ vs loading your own..if you were to buy all the components ?

When I buy new factory .45 ACP FMJ for example, by the time it lands in my storage closet...it ends up being around $0.50 to $0.55 per round for say American Eagle.....what would it cost me to build my own equivalent round...$0.25 ? $0.30 ?

Thanks in advance

I think I can do $0.46/round (including a $45 reloading kit), $0.40/round including $30 dies, or $0.37/round not including the cost of a kit/dies....

I averaged out the bullets, primers, brass and powder over 500 rounds....

I just purchased all of the components ;) , so this is acurate as of Nov 1, 2010...:yingyang:

I always get flamed every time I answer this question by people who bought components a decade ago and think that a guy can load for that amount. So unless you are driving the delorean from back to the future I advise you to go on SFRC website put 2,000 small pistol primers and 1 lb of pistol powder in your cart and get the shipping estimate.

This enough to make 2000 rounds. Divide the price of your cart by 2000 and you will get exactly how much it costs to make a round of 45 acp
on Nov 11th 2010.

If you cast your own bullets then that is it. If not go through the echange there are lots of suppliers of cast, plated, and jacketed bullets there. All work well for 45 ACP. Find out pricing for 2000 shipped add that amount to the first amount and you have your answer.

you can cut that even further- use cast as the 45 acp will NEVER achieve enough velocity to justify jacketed bullets- i only use a jacketed about every magazine ful at the end to clean out the barrel

My current costs

8lbs of Bullseye $135
1000 primers $26
Brass... Once fired usually goes for $100/K or 10cents a piece
Boolits 230gr FMJRN $90/K

Roughly 25cents per loaded round using 4.5gr of powder per round.

Less if you dismiss the cost of brass... I mean after the firts few loadings the brass could be considered "free".

'Currently have about 6k loaded and ready to go.. 'Don't know what that would cost buying loaded ammo at retail :puke:

you can cut that even further- use cast

I splurge of FMJ's to avoid the choaking/blinding smoke screen layed down by cast boolits...

I hate ROin' the thrifty basterds who insist on penny-pinching by using nekkid lead.:D

not including the brass which in .45acp lasts forever. my cost for 200grn swc lead boolits, powder and primers is still under $15/100

i am loading 200 -250 rounds for what a box of factory ammo sells for around here

Andy

better not RO me then - i am the ultimate cheap guy

i run BLACK powder as well- we wouldn't get along whatsoever- i've been known for making my own weather systems
