OK, I've read through the .45 reloading posts, and tried a search. Thus far I can't seem to answer the following question: What does it cost (roughly) per 1000 to reload .45 ACP?

I'm trying to figure out how much I have to reload/shoot to break even on the cost of the reloading equipment.

I know I'm a noob here - Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

your not a nob, depends on cost of powder you get the primers, and type of bullet, and how much powder your going to use, and if your using new or old brass, that i mean by old if fired before.

machine your going to use to relaod, well there are all kinds of models/ prices

I have spoken to a guy from my range, and he said he can get every thing down to 32 cents a round,

ask wolf ammo who does reloads commerically what his cost his, it all varies, but if you write off the cost of the equiment as soon as you get it etc you can produce your ammo cheaper than buying it

Haven't ever bothered to figure it out myself, but it's way less than factory. Usually about half or less of buying factory. Like TGC says, a lot depends on what you pay for powder, primers and bullets. Jacketed bullets will increase the cost.
You can figure on about 6 months or so of steady shooting to break even. If you're just loading .45's. Less when you load your 7mm Mag too.
A cast 230 grain RN or FP(flat point) with Bullseye works well out of my Colt. My 4.5 grain target load gives 1555 rounds per pound of powder.

I just bought 1000 large pistol primers for $28. I can buy 1000 175grain semi-wadcutter lead bullets for $70. I can buy 1lb of W231 for $30.

I use 5 grains of powder per round, with 7000 grains of powder in a pound I will use just under a pound for 1000. With my mistakes and lossage of powder let's say I use a complete pound.

That puts me at $128 for 1000 .45 rounds assuming I have my press and have my own brass.

Roughly speaking it's about $6.40 per box of 50 .45ACP. None of my numbers include tax's but you pay tax's on both the components and factory ammo, so it's a moot point.

If you're talking 45ACP, not including the brass/dies, the consumables run roughly $0.25 - .30 per round.

Very definitely worth your while if you buy bullets in 1000 piece lots.

Great posts thank you.

Locally I'm looking at $23 to $24 per 50 for factory. Figure $0.48 per round.

At $0.16 for reloading, not including brass. Savings are $0.32 per round.

So to save $500 against reloading gear I'm looking at 1600 rounds.

Sounds like a must :D I'm gonna have to start shopping for reloading gear. Sunray makes a good point, it would support my rifle range habit as well as allowing me to work up some TSXs for my 7RM too

Thanks folks,

Something wrong with your ciphering.....Bullet .08....primer.05....powder .03...I get .16 cents for each round, that's alot less then your .32cents, what gives?

Whoops savings are $0.32 cents per round not cost

I calculated this yield for my 9mm

Reloading costs

Powder - W231
Cost - $28.00
Amount - 1 lb
Yield - 1,555.56 rounds

Cost per 1000 rounds = $18.00

Primers - Winchester
Cost - $30.00
Yield - 1,000.00 rounds

Cost per 1000 rounds = $30.00

Bullets - Bulk 120 gr
Cost - $68.00
Yield - 1000 bullets rounds

Cost per 1000 rounds = $68.00

Brass - Mixed 1F 9mm brass
Cost - $40.00
Yield - 7000 rounds (Assume brass lasts 7 firings)

Cost per 1000 rounds = $5.71

Total cost per 1000 rounds = $121.71
Total cost per 50 rounds = $6.09

Average retail cost per 50 rounds = $22.00

Total savings = $15.91 per 50 rounds

For what it's worth... I just loaded a bunch of 12g shells...

1lb of Alliant Red Dot $17
350 of 1000($20) wads $7
25lb of 7.5 shot $27
350 of 1000($45) primers $14.75
My own hulls... $0

Total cost for 14 box's $65.75... cost per box about $4.70.

I was going a little slow as I was helping with the kids a bit and marking each shell for future identification but it took me 3 hours. I most likely could have done it in 2. I used a borrowed MEC Sizemaster press.

Last time we bought factory Winchester shells they were $6.60 per box. I save $2 per box by reloading.

i know its an old topic, but where do you guys get your 200gr semiwadcutter? (14 cents a bullet all taxes and stuff included, +5cents for powder and primer, for a grand total of 19 cents a round)
My local dealer only has copper plated bullets.
