.450 Marlin vs. 45/70 Gov't vs. .444 Marlin.

450 marlin

In your first line you comment on a big bore lever gun,450's seem to be more common than 45-70's in the levers.A friend had a 444 it seemed to be very small to shoulder and a ton of muzzle jump/flash.
I have a Browning BLR in 450 stainless grey laminate,I really like this thumper.
The BLR also has a clip other than a tube magazine.I shoot hornady lever revolutions 325's,they kill like the hammer of Thor!! I carry this gun while pushing deer chase's,much lighter than the auto's.
Not much fun to shoot off a bench though.

Has anyone used the Jae-Bok Crater in their .444, .450 or .45/70?

I have shot several hundred of his 420gr Crater Lites but I am out of them now and do not intend to buy any more they are a very accurate bullet and I am very happy with them it is just that I prefer in a lighter bullet the 350gr Swift A-Frames.

I load Jae-Bok 550gr Craters @ 1580fps and have about 60 left and Beartooth Bullets 525gr Piledrivers @ 1600fps = 200 + left.

These are my bullets of choice when I head in after a grizzly...

Did you have any problems with getting them shipped from the US? I contacted Beartooth some time ago and they would not ship to Canada.

Been a while since I ordered any from either Jae-Bok or Beartooth both shipped at that time from what I understand Beartooth doesn't ship any longer but Jae-Bok Young still does.

I want to try some of these from Jae-Bok 45 Colt/454 Casull 420 gr. WFNGC - 1.000 OAL, 0.400 Crimp to Nose, 0.370 Meplat in my 4.25" SRH I'm loading Beartooth 405gr @ 1330fps should be able to push these 420's to almost 1300fps.

:)

That will be some serious bear medicine! The picture of the 550gr beside a loaded .357 mag round is awesome. I read on another forum about a guy who used the 420gr in Africa on cape buffalo. One shot was all that was needed.

Hows the performance of the Hornady FTX on game?

Supposed to be good but I don't know yet, I've only just started loading them last year for my T/C Contender carbine in 45-70 other than working up a load (1850fps) and sighting in the barrel (will hit the 12" gong every time @ 200 yards) I haven't had a chance to shoot any game.

I feel that they should perform well at this velocity but I have read that any faster they may come apart.

:)

My preference for bullets in these large cals. are LBT designs, the WFN and the LFN, they of course, don't make/sell bullets just the molds.
