460 smith and wesson revolver.

Now that my new (to me) 657 is on the way, The 500 and 460 go to the top of the " Holy #### I Just Gotta Have One Just Because" List. Awesome pieces of kit.

Recoil on these things isn't really bad at all. The noise on the other hand is something else.

I've had the dubious honor of shooting a couple of rounds of 454 Casull and you're right. The 460 generates some serious PUSH but it's not like the "baseball bat to the open palm" feeling that the Casull gives.

In fact once you get over the sound, flame and concussion wave that hits you it's not any worse than a .44 Magnum. It just pushes the same for a little longer.

Am I the only one comepletely unimpressed with the .460? We can't hunt with handguns up here, so the 200grn bullet's advantage is useless. The old casull gets closer and closer to the .460 when you up the bullet weight. Plus those VXRs, while they look badass they are monstrous and feel it too.

Yes they are. They are all of that.

But given that handguns up this way are only good for giggles or for shooting in some of the various competitions such as IPSC, IDPA and cowboy action this means that for us Canadians handguns are toys. And what's wrong with having a toy that is big, noisy, shoots a huge ball of flame out every orifice on it and generates a silly looking grin? Sure it's not practical or sensible. But then neither is a Lamborghini, Ferrari, Mclaren or any other exotic car. These cars, the huge hand cannons and many other extreme devices all exist because we enjoy a little taste of excess in our lives just to add some spice to our time on this plane of existence. Live a little, buy a ticket on the big roller coaster.... :D

Hey, just to be clear I had a Desert Eagle at one point. I like toys too :). I do remain unimpressed by the .460 tho! The .500 is another story.

Toys is right. No different then shooting a big caliber rifle. Its the anticipation of the noise and recoil. whole different then shooting a nine or 45 at paper. If you own one of these cannons , fill a water jug up and hammer it. The aftermath is devastating. Not that you do it all the time. Its a gun that you only shoot once in a while. novelty rules here, If you can justify it or just afford it why not. Shoot 45 long colts at paper to get a feel for the gun, then load the super slammers for the days when your recycling box is full.

I picked the 460 up today and I am HAPPY.Do I really need it?Nope, but it was so cool I forgot to even see if I hit the paper :) .Taking some frozen milk jugs tomorrow

My pal has that hand cannon and it puts a grin on my face every time we hit the range.

Its bark is way worse than its bite though... at least on the use end! The flame and thud is substantial but the recoil is managable if you have a proper shooting stance and a good grip. Once I got a few rounds down range I loaded a full wheel and went as fast as I could while keeping it safely under control. No problem!

The fun thing is, putting .45's down the pipe, thanks to the heavy frame, makes it feel like a .22.

I have short, fat fingers but big palms. The grips were very comfortable.

The recoil is pretty tame on them, I load mine right up with H 110 and 240 XTPs its teh sonic boom and flash that makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck each time you shoot it!

I'm very impressed with this gun. It is heavy but with a good carry holster it's no problem to carry around the bush and a hell of a lot better than a guide gun, shotgun or rifle. The fact that it has great ballistics and is fairly easy to shoot makes this a great wilderness carry gun. Add to that that you can shoot it all day long with 45Colt or even 454Casull makes this setup for me very practical.

Go to simply rugged holsters website and grab yourself a Sourdough holster for your 5" 460. Awesome, well built, heavy duty holster. Then grab yourself a North Dakota hunting license online and a 6NIA form from ATF. Once you get your permit back, head down to Montana with your .460V and blast whatever varmint you want!! .. just talk to a land owner and get permission. NEVER say our .460's are just a toy! You just have to go a bit further to have fun with it!

It's one of those revolvers that many say has no real purpose here in Canada unless you have an ATC .. we need to start a .460 varmint hunting squad that makes annual trips to the US! Tail gate BBQ's, wives get to stay home, etc.
Would you rather waste lead on paper or on live targets?

Who's up for it!??

:)

Great .. let's keep this thread going so that we can keep each other informed on getting this put together. I emailed the boyz in North Dakota to see when the non game license will be on sale through the govt website. Ya Dgal, PM me anytime and I will help you out all I can. Very simple process .. just takes a little time. If the CFC ever asks you WHY you need your restricted status and your revolver, tell them "for hunting" and see what they have to say next!

:)
