.50, .338 Lapua or stick to my .308's and practice?

Someone posted that McMillan rifles will be sold outta BC in the fall. THe 416 Barret is to be available.

Others told me that bullets for the 416 are not plentifull or readily available for being a new round.

I am considering a 408 Cheytac for a custom build. People claim its a dud. Compared to the 416, anyways........ A Canadian bullet manufacturer makes stuff for the 408.

I own a 338 Lapua. When I put my 308 away due to wind and brought out the 338, it did pretty damn good.

Yup. A 300 SMK launched at 3000 fps bucks the wind really well.

Will blow a musk ox or caribou off of its feet at 800yards. lol (they are not very big animals for those that do not know).

Tuktu(caribou) are not big ... Umingmak(muskox) can get quite large. I am going to get a chance to try this .50 cal a friend has here soon ... but I'm sure I'm going to go with a .338 lapua. :D

I would go for that 408 that Rick at ATRS built in the Tac 50 stock.

I understand that a 338 lapua would have no problem with the distances I mentioned ... in the hands of a competent shooter ... I would like to learn, feel confident and then shoot that out to those ranges and past that on certain animals eventually ... I like the idea of trying out something larger than .308 also. I think I'll skip the idea of the .50, consider the .338 but need to read, study and figure out which rifle make I want in .338 lapua. :D

p.s. that damn .50 looks like alot of fun though ... ;)
I had the same dilemma as you not too long ago and since my primary concern was weight since I would be mostly hunting with it, I went with the TRG in 338. Not that I pack the gun around very often or very far (usually stays in it's case in the truck while I glass big cut blocks) but I like the ability to pack it around for a decent distance without too much trouble if I had to.

If I spot something closer or am hunting areas where I know that those long shots are not possible I use a 308 or a 9.3 (depending on the animal i'm hunting) for those 200yd or less shots.

I do however want to get a 50 just for the WOW factor more than anything.

I''m stuck with deciding on which 338lapua to go with ... AI, TRG, PGW, custom ... hmmm.

PGW. No need to go south of the border if you ever need service on it. I got a PGW Coyote and never looked back. It gets the best from the US (stock and barrel) and the best from Canada (action and the craftmanship to put it all together). We should try to encourage Canadian companies, especially when the quality is on par or higher (AI, TRG...).

My 2 cents.

Don't buy AI, Don't support those Brit. better of buy Canadian.
AI are nice, but they are Way, Way over price.

I fired the Timberwolf, AI 338 and TRG 42. All are fine rifles. I agree with Gunboy that AI's are way overpriced. If money is not an option, the choice is yours.

You may want to look for something f-class friendly, and come shoot at one of the Matches down south. I'd do a pgw coyote in 308 for myself.

Ofcourse you could go full custom and then get EXACTLY what you want including an "Improved" chamber for more velocity/energy as well as better trajectory and casing life.
If you want to be truly different we can supply you with an action that at this point is totally new to Canada and at this point NO-ONE else has 1 of.
We just got in the 1st batch of Defiance actions for 338 Lapua builds we are doing until we get our Maverick actions into full production.

OR if you REALLY want to be part of an elite group of shooters you could own the 6th Nemesis rifle in Canada.

I got Sako and very happy with it, At lease I know when sticking with main brand name, I get most of my money back if I decide to sell it, I wouldn't be surprise if my next gun is PGW Timberwolf or the Coyote.
The Timberwolf and Coyote action are by far one of the best looking That I have ever saw, definitely worth every Penny, and when you deal with Ross(PGW guyS) No wonder when you get there rifle, you don't just own one, but I seen there customer got several over the year, Something to be said.

Still negotiating wiht a friend today on his HS 50 cal ... he took it narwhal hunting and got 3 of them ... however, broke the knob off the bolt handle. I want to shoot this ... but I'm liking the idea of .338 AI as you can change the barrels out to a 300 also ... decisions. HAHA :D
