.50-60 Peabody rifle ... centerfire conversion?

I will have to post a photo of my original centerfire breach and pin, later today. It is very similar to the conversion except that the centerfire pin and the long body are all one piece and my gun also has the retractor spring which is a fairly simple system, I thought

fantastic thread. thanks.

id love to pull the bullet and find out about the hollow base and all....but.....

Beater stop by your local Non destructive testing office or whip into tim hortons when you see an industrial radiography truck in the parking lot. Explain that you have a historical cartridge and that you are curious to see what the base of the bullet looks like. Let them know that it is of historical canadian miltiary interest. I can almost guarentee that someone will take an xray/radiograph of it for you.
1. it is cool challange to get an image of a lead bullet.
2. lots of NDT guys learned the trade in the military.
3. anything is better then takeing another xray of another piece of pipe!

it would take a few seconds of exposure time, and 7 minutes in the dark room, maybe 50 cents worth of film. your cost would be zero. I had an antique revolver done once (there was an inclusion in the barrel and sundry parts but the cylinder was clean)

you'll end up with a negaitive with a slightly larger then life image of the cartridge. If they get into it you might also get a good image of the rim constriction, primer etc.

2 blocks arrived . 2 peabodys on way too become centre fire . thanks too GRANT for all the info . pics too follow later . p,s. no bubba here original parts not too be altered . will be some rim fire reloadable brass for sale .

I thought that I had posted these photos some time ago but perhaps it was in a different thread. Grant posted of other calibers that Peabodys were chambered in. Mine was originally a 450-577 but I replace the barrel which was both shortened and completely buggered with rust and miscellaneous damage. Rechambered to the 45-60 Peabody but based on a 45-70 shell which has a smaller base. I am currently working on a 44-77 Sharps/Remington which is supposed to be a lengthened 45-60 but interesting in that the base of the chamber is .524 rather than the .515 which the shell is supposed to be.
