50BMG with iron sites ...

sask378 that's a good question. Gotta check and see whats available in Winnipeg when I'm there next month. I do have just under 200 rounds of 650gr fmj bullets as I've only shot 38 rounds thru my full length 50 rifle at targets. I truly wish to shoot a narwhal mainly with this new rifle from the boat next fall as it'll be open season then again for the unicorn of the ocean. BOOMER I had to laugh when I thought this one up & knew there'd be some folks who reminded me of hunting with small calibre. HAHAHA. No more 2, 3 or more shots on whale for this guy. :D Bang whales dead one shot. :D

p.s. friends ask me why did I do this ... my answer is because I can & well for snitz & giggles. ;)

Once the rifle is in my hands i'll post a full size pic of what I asked PGW to make me.(FYI my singleshot full length is for sale in precision sales) Here's my new 50bmg shorty with irons. I plan to shoot beluga whales and narwhal & hopefully a walrus from the boat with the iron sites as most shots would be anywhere from 50 yards to 150 yards or less. Scope it for long distance on muskox or any other creature on the land. :D

I will also use it to target shoot out long distance ... ;)

That is beautiful, yet mean... Love it!!

Now if that front sight mount has a rail on the bottom, you need to figure a way to attach a bayonette / sword

We have got some ammo for you....We can take it deer hunting when you are down!

Well it would appear that Mother Nature does not want me to see my new 50. HAHAHAHA. We've had crap weather since last week and a dozen flight cancellations. :( I may end up in Wpg before my rifle comes from there. HAHAHA :p

The fine folks at PGW had to figure out how to make the open sites/irons work so they had to lower the rear of the rail and test fire. I can't wait to see this thing in person. THANK YOU PGW you guys rock!

I like it: obviously with the trajectory, it can only be set for an X yard point.

A lot knock it, but these rifles really aren't much more than obsolete anti tank guns of WW2 - with a new, scoped, purpose. And like a Black Arrow anti material rifle: ###ier for it. Not necessary, like any hunting rifle, but nifty if it has to be returned for repairs. $2-300 in irons is a small investment in .50 calibre pleasure.

Much Good Luck to you Otokiak! There are of us few citizens that can utilize this power source to actually and very practically fill their larder using this excellent John Browning cartridge.

We look forward to your adventurous whaling tales Ahab.....oops! I mean Otokiak! ;)

You know what, very neat. I'm down with your line of thinking Otokiak, only wish you had the gun in time for a meet and trial in the "Stopping Rifles" shoot. I'm deadly serious, I'm in the arctic from time to time, though not yet Rankin. I'd love to meet up one day if you'd allow to try and add the ultimate power level to the "Stopping rifles" shoot, would be happy to exchange time on some interesting large rifles of more classic dress. Whatta you say from an old M14 friend / fiend?

Tried doing something similar with a 223 Remington for a plinking gun and the aperture was too small at that distance to be of any use. Perhaps because I was using a set of Magpul MBUS sights and I got what I paid for.

About as useful as a manual safety on a striker fired pistol. Just utter stupidity. But hey why not throw back up irons on it? More weight the better.

When to first modern bowhead hunt took place out from Pangnirtung, in Cumberland sound, a Boys rifle rebarrelled to .50 was taken along. A few shots were fired without results. The whale was then killed with an explosive grenade fired from a shoulder fired whaling gun.
If a coup de grace is required, a .458 has been used by Norwegian whalers.
The shot must be delivered at the correct angle to insure penetration for a lethal shot.
