Want to pick up a 590 or 590A1 but can't decide which one.

BARREL LENGTH:
-Think I'd prefer the 18.5" over the 20". Don't really care about the extra shell 20" offers but never know when you'll need an M16 bayo option :p.
-not married to the lighter 590 barrel nor the heavier walled 590A1 .... could go either way I guess
-I like the look of the fluted 590 barrel.

SIGHTS
Haven't looked at the sight picture of the Blackwater version (think I'd like it), nor have I looked through the ugly looking rear sight of the 9 shot model. The LPA sights on SPX model are ok I guess (have em on a Fabarm and always been so-so on them). Probably just be happy with a bead and maybe add an XS tritium big dot to it.

FOREND
- Can't stand the tri-railed forend on the Blackwater model. Magpul appeals to me from hat they offer. Like the Hogue too.

STOCK
-Can't imagine the regular stock would float my boat very long. Seen many 590A1's with the short LOP Hogue and dig that. Not sure if I'd be into the Speeded stock, don't see too many opinions on it. Magpul is good.
-Have no interest in the pistol grip model.

CHOKE
- I'd like a choke but not a deal breaker since it only comes on one A1 model.

GOING IN CIRCLES:confused:
All over the place on the Mossberg. One of the cooler looking models to me was the 590-14" with SpeedFeed stock and bead sight. Would probably be cool with that, maybe add the XS big dot.

-have no interest in the Mariner model
- have no interest in the heat shield

Tossing around the idea of the MagPul version since the "stock" stock & forend would just get tossed anyway, might as well purchase a model with a more useful stock-set, even if I swapped it. At least I'd have the option laying around.

Already own the 14" barrel kit so I can go that route if I wanted to.

So .... if I could imagine the perfect 590/590A1 for me it might be:

- 18.5" fluted barrel (slightly more compact and the fluting looks cool on an SG)
- either the XS ghost ring sights or just an XS big dot
- either Magpul or Hogue forend
- either Magpul, short LOP Hogue or I guess Speeded stock
- 14" barrel kit option to play with

I guess the beauty of the Mossberg is I can make it whatever I want .... just can't nail down the base model to start with.

After writing all this I'm really no closer to a decision ... LOL

They don't make a nonA1 in 18.5" , if that helps.

BARREL LENGTH: If you go 20" , get the nonA1 , the lighter barreled 20" has a better , what would be a good word , swing to it ?

SIGHTS: You'll never need anything more then a simple bead to be honest , but the classic and some what ugly Mossberg factory sight are tough as hell , definitely get the XS tritium big dot .

FOREND: Standard ones are good , magpul are a little better in that you can hang stuff , lights and such off them , and the Hogue are nice as well , I have all three on different guns , couldn't decide .lol

STOCK: Easy enough to chop down the standard factory stock , most , I think , find the Hogue short LOP stock too short , Speedfeed is kind of long and feels better on a shorter , like 14" barreled one IMHO , and magpul SGA is probably the best .

CHOKE : Thinking that's something you'll need a gunsmith to do .

One on the right , 14" speedfeed stock , all parts off the EE, barrel kit from Whatsall , nice balance to it .
ETA , replaced the hard rubber recoil pad with a limbsaver , big improvement .

Just get the 590A1 18.5" w/bead and buy the 14" kit. Will never need more...

By the way, the LPA sights on my Fabarm Pro Forces are fantastic sights. I love them. Although I love my 590A1, my Fabarm is on a different plane of refinement.

Yeah, the more I ponder this Mossberg thing the more I gravitate to the 18.5" with bead . That extra bit of barrel length does not balance well when going for the more compact route.

Agree fully with your points on the Fabarm. Refinement is far superior to Mossberg. I have a 14", think it's the SDASS model. I like the LRA sights they use. I think the issue is with cheek weld. I find the Fabarm comb slopes a little low for the sight design (at least for me). Easily fixed though.

I don't really need a Mossberg at all, but have always wanted one. That's why I'd rather take the time to nail it down because it will one ever be one. Have the bases covered with other brands.

I think Greenhouse six's advice to go with the lighter 590 barrel vs the heavier 590A1 is sound on the 20" length. (nice 14" build's there btw Greenhouse six).

This is partially why the 18.5" fluted barrel was of interest. Slightly shorter and slightly lighter.

Not sure they even make that fluted model any longer ?

If you are going with the 20" I would recommend the regular 590. As was stated, it has better balance, it's cheaper and the A1 is very front end heavy. I have the 18.5" fluted magpul series with bead sight and I really like it. I put a two round extension on it and it has better "swing" than either the 590 or 590A1 20". The 14" is nice too but useless in 3-gun unless you get it choked or VCS.

The fluting looks cool but it's not of significant benefit. It's not like you're generating enough heat while shooting to have effective heat disapation. Nor, would it provide any kind of real weight savings with the minimal amount of metal removed from the barrel.

yeah, you're correct on all points Mossberg_590A1, it just looks interesting... that's about it. Not sure they even offer that fluted Magpul model any longer ?

I went with the Blackwater A1 because I was able to find it much cheaper than the regular A1's, then I just changed out the stock and forend to the Magpul stuff. Worked out to be about $150 less than buying the A1 Magpul edition and I can still sell the speedfeed stock and tri-rail forend.

I agree. Speedfeed stock and tri-rail forend are so overrated.

I hated the front wedge sight on my blackwater, and that tri rail front was poop. I sold my blackwater and bought an spx with the fibre optic front sight and ported barrel and I love it. I recently purchased the 14" barrel kit, which should be even more fun to play with! The oem front bead is almost impossible for me to see on the barrel though, so I'll either paint or replace it.

As for the barrel length debacle, I actually love my 20" setup because of the shell capacity.

Interesting, I didn't realize the SPX is ported. I have no real issue with just a bead but like I said, would most likely add a XS big dot anyway.

Get the 20" 590A1 - you already own the 14" kit so you can play with that but you will always have the 20" to fall back on if ever you feel the need. I always have a half dozen or so 870's in various configurations but my 590A1 with the 20" tube and ghost ring sights is the one I will always keep for those 'just in case' moments.

590A1 18.5 with the Insight forend is 559 @ no sale sports right now. That's a better-than-Bud's-gun-shop kind of price.

You sure it's in stock? Most of the items there are not.

They are in decent supply in all stores, but due to the major discount may not be available for online order. Sometimes I forget there aren't any physical locations out east.

Almost shat my pants as they actually have a sale item in stock, online!!!
