Thought I'd start this thread as I've never seen one before for this specific setup. I am going to build a 590A1 14" retrograde with a parkerized 590A1 heavywalled heatshield, mossberg factory GRS installed, a mesa side saddle, most likely sniper grey cerakote finish TBD and to finish it off a vang comp barrel job. Thought I'd give people a detailed step by step incase they wanted to do it themselves.

April 5th- acquired wood furniture
To start this retrograde build i'll need the furniture, sure I could get any generic mossberg furniture and stain it but why not get the authentic mossberg retrograde walnut furniture...20210421_004142.jpg
The first issue to address is the foregeip. I will have to modify the factory 7-3/4" foregrip to fit the 6-3/4 tube assembly. The only other model that currently uses the 6-3/4 other than the shockwave lineup and the 14" 590a1 lineup is the mossberg 500 field. This is not a retro looking foregrip I just thought I'd make it known incase anybody preferred that style forend for there own build. Photo below

April 11th... got the mesa 6 shell side saddle PN 90390. I wanted to run a aridus detachable setup but there sold out everywhere in canada so this is the second best I could find 20210421_003147.jpg 20210421_003234.jpg

April 15th ... ordered a class 3 590A1 14" PN 51689 with factory ghost rings...should arrive in a week ( so I was told )

April 16th ... ordered meprolight PN ML38501 this is the tritium model. I like this better than the factory orange front post as this has a dot rather than a line and I can run a Aridus CROM with either a holosun 407/507 or a trijicon RMR in the future and allow for a very nice Co-witness

April 17th... got a magpul MS1 coyote sling paired with uncle Mike HD 1-1/4 sling swivels and a S&J gen 3 delrin no jam follower and a S&J 48" high tension spring that ill need to cut down. 20210421_003650.jpg20210421_003409.jpg

April 19th... ordered limbsaver classic recoil pad 10102 or you can get the airtech 10806( this will fit the retrograde wood furniture the closest in width and only require minor modifications to the length) Limbsaver doesn't really make a wood recoil pad for mossberg specifically other than 10601 field/ deer model but thats way to big for this stock. Limbsaver however makes plenty for the mossberg synthetic stocks, sga stocks and a whole bunch of remington wood stocks so I found the one that sized up the best to mine and that was the 10102

April 20th... ordered a 590A1 parkerized heat shield PN 16335P
This obviously won't go on with the grs there so I will have to modify it so a cutout is made where the GRS sit and the shield essentially wraps itself around the sights.

Now the worst part....waiting for the gun to come in so we can proceed. I need the synthetic foregrip the gun comes with to use as reference for my retrograde wood foregrip otherwise I'd be doing that in the meantime.. I'll keep this updated whenever I get another component added on and a detailed step by step on how to modify a non 6-3/4 wood foregrip to fit properly. :dancingbanana:

A keyhole saw helps to modify and counterbore the longer pump to fit a shorter action. I had to do the same for my Surefire pump when converting to the 14" 590A1.

I modified a Magpul MOE forend to fit the 14” — a keyhole saw would have worked best but I didn’t have one on hand so did it with a Dremel.

The newer retrograde stock is a good choice for this project as it has a much shorter LOP than the vintage Mossberg wood stocks — I have both and was surprised at the difference — so you’ll end up with a tight and compact shotgun.

Most interested to see how you manage the heatshield as it will end almost exactly at the muzzle and the mag tube cap looks like it might block the front clamp bolts — looking forward to seeing it done!

Edit* I was thinking spade when I typed that " what size " *
How would the keyhole saw work ? To chip away at little pieces at a time?
Wouldn't a spade be best to just run it down the middle and take down the extra 1" out I don't need .

I actually just ordered a moe grip for my vang comp gun, I am hoping to modify it to fit just like you said using the dremel.., never even thought of a Keyhole saw I was thinking using a spade bit...

Very cool. You'll have to cut about an inch off the front of the heat shield to get it to fit which isn't easy as that is reinforced. Plus they dont fit easily on a heavy barrel which your gun has. You'll be in for a bit of work, I've BTDT. Also I'd have bought a leather sling as that really completes the look. You can find handcrafted ones on Amazon that are Cdn made for $50. But that's just my opinion.

The heatshield I got was for the 590a1 so I won't struggle at all. Even a standard shockwave is heavywalled as a standard 590a1 there all the same thickness at .101" .
I'll just have to modify the front cutout around the grs I don't plan on cutting it back at all just essentially notching out the area the grs is in and sliding it right on. Then dropping it down . I hope I don't botch it as the heatshield is out of stock now :p
And I would prefer a leather sling tbh the ms1 is nice but a real classic look would be better. Got any good ones to recommend or a certain seller ?

I've used hole saws of the correct diameter to do similar work.

Thanks for another good idea I think between a spade and a holesaw I should be ok to trim back the inner ring that the nut sits on 1". I'll probably use the holesaw q first depending on how thick the teeth are I can take it right right and not even need a spade.

If you want old school military the Triple K: 1 1/4″ Military Sling is an option, Marstar shows out of stock at the moment.

I last got one from Boosteady store on Amazon.ca. I think they're American but it was a really good quality sling. Would make your gun really pop.

Or this one would also look good:

I happen to have 1" and 1.5" Heavy duty Nylon webbing and plastic hardware (It's better than it sounds) and Metal sliding buckles as well as plastic ones if scratching the receiver is a concern. Recently I have made 2x prototype slings. One is used on my 14" shockwave with 590A1 stock installed.
I have a 90's to early 2000's period looking Butt harness with heat treated steel D ring on the right side of the stock. On the front is a bespoke Magazine plate .100" thick with a 3/8" hole for forged steel U.S mil spec HK sling hooks (NOT CHEAP CRAP but the real deal) mounted so the hole is on the left side.. In between is a 2 point adjustable sling similar to what the "go fast" guys would have back in that time. When I can post pictures I will.

Testing: 3 range days with two users. My wife... Not so interested so not much to say other than she didn't have the sling go in front of the muzzle. Me, I have it slung over the right shoulder diagonal across my back, under the left arm.
There is no interference and the sling can be tightened or loosened on the fly with your support hand to help steady your shots/aim. Vickers and Viking both make similar slings. Mine has thicker material over the shoulder less prone to twisting.
If let hang it does NOT tag your nads like a single point. The muzzle points to the outside of your left foot. This can be re worn so the gun is carried on your back, muzzle down. Carried this way both hands can be freed to pick up brass, tie your boot or what ever. It is reasonably secure and I have done a pretty good shake down to test it. On one of the slings I have a quick release buckle. I have tested it for two weeks without failure or accidental opening. I wouldn't bother but that being said some people really want to have them.

Got the gun but have some issues with the front sights being canted and no it's not the angle of the photo, multiple people seen it in person and agree...I'm gonna give bullseye a call before I post any further and see what they'll do for me as not 1 but 2 separate employees promised me it would be inspected before I got it to avoid this very ordeal20210424_231820.jpg20210424_231817.jpg

I like this setup, good job on the prototypes. I am looking for that rear attachment for the stock . Would you be able to make 2 and I can buy them off you ?

Haven't seen a 590 with a straight front site. Ever. I quite literally have never seen one set at 90°.
