Here is my current 590A1:

Specifically, it currently fits six 2 3/4" shells in the magazine, has a "speedfeed" stock that fits two more 2 3/4" shells on each side (so far I like it), and a set of three-dot "rifle" sights that I think are okay. I slapped a Vickers sling on it set up with a Burnsed socket to run as a single-point until I can get around to get the correct hardware to run it as a two-point.

So...I'd like some input from others that have spent time running scatterguns (not just the 590, but any pump or semi in a "defensive" mode). Sling, sights, lights, round count are all areas of interest for me.

On the sling - I like the idea of a two-point because I find a two point works well for long-ish, heavy-ish firearms. I tend to like sling attachment points on the left side, one near where my right hand grasps the firearm, and one forward. I am well aware that a pump gun will mean that I need to attach that sling further forward than I like on an AR - but that's the price I pay for being able to fire 00 buckshot.

At this point I'm leaning towards keeping the existing stock. I would be good with a shorter LOP, but I do like the speedfeed mechanism so far. I have never really cared for external stock mounted shell carriers, and sidesaddles get hung up on EVERYTHING when you let the gun hang across your chest.

Light - I don't love the idea of a surefire fore-end, but I'm willing to consider it. Has anyone used them as well as other options on a pump gun and what input do you have to offer? Does anyone have specific input on running a pistol-style weapon mounted light on either the mag tube in front of the forearm, or on the forearm? Any input on potential interference with the sling?

Sights - this is a low priority as the sights on there right now are indeed serviceable, and pretty reasonable. That said, I'd like to have at least a tritium front sight since this is a defensive firearm, and a ghost ring rear because I would like to have the versatility to be able to accurately place slugs out to 100 yards....and that screams "ghost ring" to me.

XS sights offers two configurations of front tritium sight (standard dot or big dot). They also offer two configurations of rear sight:

My past fighting shotgun was an 870, and wore a set of Trijicon sights. They were absolutely great - but Trijicon doesn't seem to make the same sight for Mossbergs.

The model with the exposed ghost ring and the pic rail is available with both dot sizes. The winged model is only available with the standard dot. Pic rail is neat in theory since I could put a red dot on it at some point....but if I have a set of ghost rings on it, I don't know that a red dot would really add much functionality within 100 yards...and I'm not optimistic enough to think that I'm going to be launching rifled slugs with any useful accuracy past 100 yards.

I'd love to hear from folks that have run any of the XS sights on their fighting shotguns, or the Meprolight front tritium blade sight (although that says it's intended for use with a ghost ring rear...). What has worked best for you up close, and at longer ranges?

Edit - since the 14" Mossberg barrel won't work with this magazine tube, that question is off the table. If I want a 14", I'll just buy a complete firearm.

Your mag tube won't work with the 14" barrel, you'll have to swap it out along with the forend. It will become a dedicated 14" unless you are prepared to swap out all that stuff every time you change barrels.
If you keep the 18.5" gun you could add a +2 extension and maybe a GG+G QD mount at end of mag tube, that'll deal with your burnsed socket. A Magpul SGA stock is a nice upgrade for Mossbergs and you can add a QD socket and go full QD swivels on your sling.
If you must have 14" my advice would be to find a real 14" 590A1 with the sights you want (bead vs ghost ring) off the EE. Otherwise you will have a bastard child of a 14" but that is just my opinion, lots of folks have bought the 14" kit and are happy.
Or you could buy one of the 14" shockwave 590's (it's not an A1) from I Run Guns.

To be honest the 14" comment was an afterthought. I have no issue with an 18.5" barrel...and an S&J +2 mag extension makes a lot of sense to me.

I was very happy with my old 870 - 18.5" barrel, +2 mag, ghost rings...that size/shape/configuration works well for me. I just really like the tang safety and the ability to load rounds without getting my rather large digits all cross-threaded inside the feed port.

I had the blackwater 590A1 and hated the sights, so I sold it to get the SPX model with the fiber optic front and ghost ring rears; it's much better IMO.

Your sling and light mounting solutions can be remedied with magpul SGA furniture. I have both the stock and foreend on my gun, and it feels 10x better than the stock stuff. I have an inforce WML mounted on the foreend via picatinny rail section, and my sling is taken care of with the magpul rear sling hook and tube mounted QD swivel.

I do also have the 14" barrel kit, which is a PITA to switch every time you want to mix it up, and the front sight is also a b**** to change for something better. A RDS would solve that problem, but i'm not sold on that idea just yet. I get much more usage out of the 18.5" barrel setup.

Ok, let's go back to your sights. I have never held a 590 with those particular sights, i'm guessing they are silver soldered to the barrel. If you want to change sights they'll have to be removed and barrel (and mag tube and cap) will need to be refinished to match. Cost goes up. Then you can choose from factory ghost rings or Sage or whatever else you can find for ghost rings and install them before refinishing.
You can probably change out front dovetail sight blade for tritium or hi-vis sights on the barrel you have.
It depends on what you want but i have found it's better off to find what you want as far as sights and barrel length, and buy that version in the first place. It will save you a lot of money in sight upgrades and refinishing.
Some folks really like those barrel mounted rifle sights and it might be easy to move on the EE, only one way to find out.
Other than stock changes and sling swivel upgrades the 590A1 doesn't need much to improve.
Maybe a hi-vis follower and spring or thread for chokes.
The mossberg ergonomics turn to shyt if you add a pistol grip stock, but the Magpul SGA is a nice upgrade if you can live with the modern look.

They are a fine, price friendly shotgun with military pedigree and don't really need much to improve them. I am old and crotchity and cheap so they work fine for me. :)

I am fairly firmly set against fiber optic sights on firearms that may be used for "serious social purposes" I have seen too many guys shooting IDPA competitions finishing a match without their front sight...and having done a moderate amount of tactical shooting in low light, I am 100% confident saying that I far prefer to have tritium in my front sight when something goes "bump".

I like magpul furniture in general, and the look of the SGA....but I am not sold on giving up the speedfeed. Of all the "on-gun" shell carrier systems I have tried, it's the one that is working the best for me so far. I'm not going to rule out the SGA yet....but I do want to try some options. I may definitely try running one of the pistol lights that I already own on the left side of an SGA fore-end. The price is definitely arguing that it's worth trying! Do you have any light/sling interference issues when shooting at targets illuminated by the WML?

I see a machine screw holding the rear sight on....and the front is just drifted into a dovetail base that is silver soldered on. I think that I can manage an XS sight install without a gunsmith saving me from myself (but if you hear a lot of cursing coming from me in about 6 weeks, you know that theory was wrong).

I agree 100% on the Mossberg ergos. I wanted a 500/590/590a1 BECAUSE of the tang safety, and it would be the height of silliness to move to a pistol grip that makes it harder to manipulate. I have come around to liking relatively straight stocks anyways...my Scout rifle shooting has taught me that they really do point well once you've spent the requisite amount of time practicing.

I also happen to agree with you on the value proposition offered by the Mossbergs...especially since I picked this one up used.

Limbsaver Classic Precision-fit Recoil Pad model: 10121 , it's all most a perfect fit , ditch the hockey puck pad that's on it .
I cut my speedfeed stock down 5/8" , and added the limbsaver .

And here some info on shorting the stock ht tp://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=298709

Now THAT is what I'm talking 'bout! Thank you sir.

Those options look just about perfect for my preferred sort of sling. I do like the versatility of the QD swivels and the Burnsed socket. Running that setup on AR's while in the US of A has spoiled me more than just a little bit. Seeing as I might already have the speedfeed stock pulled apart for "tweaking...."

IMO the 18.5" 590a1 needs:

- S&J 2 round mag tube extension
- S&J follower
- Mcarbo trigger spring kit
- limbsaver recoil pad if using supplied stock
- or ... Hogue 12.5" LOP stock
- sling of choice: - if quick adjust I'd recommend Rewire Gear, if traditional 2 point I'd recommend Slogan Outdoors with Brute composite swivels
- I hate the Mossberg rear GRS and recommend the small XS winged sight in your second picture, that's what I've swapped mine out to. Works great.
- CDM flashlight mount
- flashlight of your choice.

This upgrades add up, but turns it into a much better weapon imo.

When you're mounting a light a couple of things come to mind:

1) mount it on the hand guard, not on the barrel/mag tube in front of the hand guard, you may need to use the light while the action is open
2) definitely use a sturdy weapon light
3) to avoid sling issues, mount the flashlight on the opposite side of the hand guard from the sling attachment, then it's away from the sling and your body when slung . Your fingers are then in a good position to operate a tail switch on lights like the Surefire X300, or the M3 from L3 Technologies.
4) The Surefire forend is $110 cheaper for Mossies than it is for 870's (not sure how or why)

I'm not a fan of the Magpul forend, but I have an Ergo rail set up on my shotgun and it's the t*ts, they make both tri-rail and keymod hand guards for Mossies, just tri-rails for 870's (again, no clue why only Mossies). I like rails because they let you run a hand stop, and tailor the thickness of the grip to your preference, and it's easier to get or make rail panels as aggressive as you want them without risking destroying the forend.

The sights you have are fine ,they will do 100yds easy , there are people out there who can place slugs out to 100 yards with a bead sight, maybe see about upgrading them with tritium , if only the front sight .
I love Ghost Ring Sight , I've used LPA and the Mossberg factory ones , unlike madashell , I like the Mossberg ones ,why , because the Ring is thicker , and with my old eyes , the thinner rings of some completely disappear and give me no reference point , they're suppose to ghost out , but still be there .

ETA , FAB Defence make a inexpensive railed forend for mounting a light that's much like the factory one , I've got one sitting in the parts bin , if you interested .

I agree....the sights are definitely a low priority for me. They are serviceable, if not ideal. I am a huge fan of aperture sights - have been since the first time someone handed me a C7 in 1992. I like the longer sight radius that you get from moving the rear sight to the tail end of the receiver....and I am also a big fan of the fact that my aging eyes have less to worry about with a ghost ring. The honest truth is that the only rifles that I leave equipped with open sights (instead of aperture sights) - even if they are just backups for optics - are my milsurps.

I may take you up on the purchase of that FAB defense forearm when I make it up to Alberta. I'm currently in Houston so it'll probably be at least another week before I manage to disentangle myself from the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. For the time being, that 590a1 is spending all of it's time "cruiser ready"....they've lifted the curfew in my area, but there is still one in place for the city of Houston, and there are still definitely issues with looting. Given the general disruption of life that has happened in a lot of areas, there's a chance that it'll get worse before it gets better.

Best things I did to mine was an S&J extension and a larger safety, the safety is also more tactile than factory. This is nice in the winter with heavy gloves on, when your fingers turn into flippers.

IMO the best thing you can do to your SG is to ship it to Casey(Tacord) for his Full Vang Comp System mod......and I prefer a plain old bead sight.

Agreed. Larger safety and Vang Comp porting is on the menu for the future.

When I do get around to a dedicated 14" barreled 590a1, it'll wear the Big Dot front bead....but for the time being I want the versatility of the ghost rings.

I recently installed the M-Carbo trigger-spring kit in my Mossberg.

I'm loving it.

It's a very good upgrade to your trigger, for very little money.
