Here is my current 590A1:
Specifically, it currently fits six 2 3/4" shells in the magazine, has a "speedfeed" stock that fits two more 2 3/4" shells on each side (so far I like it), and a set of three-dot "rifle" sights that I think are okay. I slapped a Vickers sling on it set up with a Burnsed socket to run as a single-point until I can get around to get the correct hardware to run it as a two-point.
So...I'd like some input from others that have spent time running scatterguns (not just the 590, but any pump or semi in a "defensive" mode). Sling, sights, lights, round count are all areas of interest for me.
On the sling - I like the idea of a two-point because I find a two point works well for long-ish, heavy-ish firearms. I tend to like sling attachment points on the left side, one near where my right hand grasps the firearm, and one forward. I am well aware that a pump gun will mean that I need to attach that sling further forward than I like on an AR - but that's the price I pay for being able to fire 00 buckshot.
At this point I'm leaning towards keeping the existing stock. I would be good with a shorter LOP, but I do like the speedfeed mechanism so far. I have never really cared for external stock mounted shell carriers, and sidesaddles get hung up on EVERYTHING when you let the gun hang across your chest.
Light - I don't love the idea of a surefire fore-end, but I'm willing to consider it. Has anyone used them as well as other options on a pump gun and what input do you have to offer? Does anyone have specific input on running a pistol-style weapon mounted light on either the mag tube in front of the forearm, or on the forearm? Any input on potential interference with the sling?
Sights - this is a low priority as the sights on there right now are indeed serviceable, and pretty reasonable. That said, I'd like to have at least a tritium front sight since this is a defensive firearm, and a ghost ring rear because I would like to have the versatility to be able to accurately place slugs out to 100 yards....and that screams "ghost ring" to me.
XS sights offers two configurations of front tritium sight (standard dot or big dot). They also offer two configurations of rear sight:
or
My past fighting shotgun was an 870, and wore a set of Trijicon sights. They were absolutely great - but Trijicon doesn't seem to make the same sight for Mossbergs.
The model with the exposed ghost ring and the pic rail is available with both dot sizes. The winged model is only available with the standard dot. Pic rail is neat in theory since I could put a red dot on it at some point....but if I have a set of ghost rings on it, I don't know that a red dot would really add much functionality within 100 yards...and I'm not optimistic enough to think that I'm going to be launching rifled slugs with any useful accuracy past 100 yards.
I'd love to hear from folks that have run any of the XS sights on their fighting shotguns, or the Meprolight front tritium blade sight (although that says it's intended for use with a ghost ring rear...). What has worked best for you up close, and at longer ranges?
Edit - since the 14" Mossberg barrel won't work with this magazine tube, that question is off the table. If I want a 14", I'll just buy a complete firearm.
