Looking for some feedback on groupings from the 597 owners. I bought my first 597 last week in the TVP format and now have about 750 rounds through it. I have had it on the bench, on bags, shooting at 25 yards and cannot get a 5 shot group under 1 1/2"

So far I have tried
CCI Mini mags
CCI Stingers
CCI Velocitors
American Eagle
3 different types of Federal bulk
Remington yellow jackets
Winchester power points
Winchester wild cat

Everything feeds and ejects fine (the remington had some FTF's) but I can't get a decent group, also my first shot out of every clip is usually a flier.

Everything is tight, the new scope was installed by a gunsmith. I have a hammer and extractor coming for it but I don't think it will make a difference as far as accuracy goes other than maybe some trigger pull error.

I consistently shoot about 1 moa off the same bench at 200 yards with my .243 so I'm sure its mostly not my fault .

I bought this gun because I really liked the stock and I thought it would be a tack driver. Maybe I should have bought the cz instead.

Is there something I could have overlooked, what do your 597's group?

With the Federal Bulk packs I shoot on average around 2" at 50 meters. With Mini-Mags that drops to 1" or less at 50 meters. CCI Stingers shot around 5" at 50 meters. These are measurements for 10 shot groups, using a 597 LSS scoped with a Ruko 3-9x40 scope. Rifle has a Volquartsen trigger, scope rail and extractor and around 7000 rounds through it. I found the volquartsen target hammer made a big difference in grouping, as it is around 3.5lb with NO creep. The stock trigger pull was kinda crunchy... My bolt action TOZ-78 will shoot 10 rounds at 50 meters into a group smaller than a dime all day long... no semi can touch a bolt!

Same, roughly 2" @ 50m with Volq hammer & extractor. Fine for my use, and as a bonus 30 round mags are only $20. They require 5 minutes with an emery board to get a couple rough edges off where the mag seats onto the mechanism in the action that makes it 'last round hold open', then good to go. Can't touch my Savage bolt for accuracy, didn't expect or need it to.

I need to get a Volq hammer, because the trigger is what holds my accuracy back. As it stands, I'm doing ~3-4in at 50 yards and roughly 2in at 25...

This gritty trigger pull must go down from 8 to like, 3-4.

Sounds like i might not be too impressed...im used to my BRNO #5 accuracy. :D

Ive always thought about a semi auto, but my bolt action BRNO serves me so well in the gopher patch.

You won't be impressed comparing it to your fancy bolt actions that's for sure!
My $140 597 loves the Federal bulk pack ammo, and it groups under 1" at 30 yards for the whole clip (and that's a dead gopher every time!).
No other ammo I've tried can do better in it, and something strange I've noticed is that the first shot out of the clip with any other ammo is about 2 inches left of centre, then all the others group within about 3inches... weird, but no matter because i just keep feeding it the Federals happily.

None of the ammo that you mention you have tried has worked well for me in my accurate Martini International, the best groups(for the money) came with Federal Gold Medal Target loads, this is not the expensive ammo, at around $4/50.

My ten year old daughter gets 1.5-2" groups at 25 yards with her base 597, a Bushnell Banner red-dot sight and CCI blazer ammo.
Granted she is shooting off a bench using a Harris bi-pod, but she's ten fer pete's sake...

I am getting anywhere from 1" to about 1/2" at 50 yards with any ammo in standard velocity, some does better (Lapua) and some does so-so (remington target). Of all ammo you mentioned you haven't tried anything under 1200 fps maybe that is the problem. Try rounds that are subsonic at the muzzle.

Also check your scope - at 25 yards most scopes are parallaxed to death, you may be surprised to see same 1.5" at 50 that you see at 25.

That is exactly what mine is doing......its driving me insane. I have about $950 invested in this thing right now and if the new hammer doesn't fix it.........

Also "22lr" my scope can correct for parrallax error and is always set for what range I am shooting at, but you are right as my groups don't grow a whole lot at 50

I was using Remington Thunderbolt. Moving to CCI HV soon...

I was using the same stuff and had 15 misfires in 200 rounds. I was also getting about a 2-2.5" group at 50 yards. I also grabbed some CCI and a whole lot of American Eagle from the Cabelas opening that I want to try. Never again will I buy thunderbolts.

Well with my 597 LSS with Factory Remington 3-9X Scope I am grouping 1" @ 25M and roughly 1.5-2" @ 50M and 3-4" @ 100M with Federal Champion Bulk Pack shooting Prone with a Harris Bi-Pod...I am really happy with my purchase but I definately want to replace the trigger group...any suggestions?

Well you can get a VQ target hammer it's supposed to reduce thr trigger pull by 50%...I installed one a couple of days ago, but I didn't notice that much difference (only dryfired it a coupel times)... :/ I'll guess I'll have to shoot it to know for sure...
