Yes... a VS thread. I'm thinking of re-chambering a 6.5x55 in order to get a bit more zip. I'll still have a 6.5x55 in a different rifle. The -06 and the Rem Mag have the same powder capacity, and obviously shoot the same bullet. They are very very similar, I know, but what would cause you to choose one over the other?
 
One is cool and the other is cooler. The 6.5 Rem Mag is sweet, but will require a boltface change, and you could do a 6.5-06 AI with no change, buy Nosler 280AI brass to neck down, and get 140gr bullets doing over 3000fps or 120gr bullets at 3250fps. That my friends was an excitied run on sentence.
 
I had a 6.5-06 that was awsome.It was made on a Fn 98 action,With 120gr bullets a buddy and I shot a Loonie sized group @ 200 yds.
 
Yes but it would be a sin. As for the choice between the other two calibers, the 6.5-06 is less work to set up, and easier to acquire and form cases. The 6.5 Rem Mag is getting so rare you might as well consider it a wildcat handloading proposition anyway.
 
For a better fit i neck down 9.3x62mm to 8mm and complete with a full size die 9.3x62mm.
30-06 brass are .366" Diam base compare to .373" for the 9.3x62mm.
So the 6.5x55mm base Diam is .379", i have only .006" expension " au lieu de " .013" inch.
The better brass are Hornady and they are the less expensive. I do it that way only when a barrel is originally chamber in 6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser. Use light RemOil for sizing and have no dents on the formed neck.

That's a good point. 25-06 cases would be easily converted, but maybe the 6.5 rem mag cases will be all gone in 10 years or less [guessing?]. I know where I can find some once fired 6.5 rem mag cases right now, but who knows about the future. That will affect resale value down the road too.

6.5-06 is cooler, but rechambering to it would not work, as the base diameter of the 6.5 Swede is larger than the '06 case, so a barrel set-back as mentioned. 6.5 Rem mag can be made from any magnum cases, but could take a little work initially.
 
The 6.5/06 is an awesome round. It is a handloaded cartridge, and in my opinion is well worth the extra work. Other attributes are that it uses a common boltface, readily available brass and a common case holder for reloading. When loaded, the 6.5/06 is a very versatile round.
 
I've worked with 6.5-06,260 and 264WM. I wouldn't bother with a 6.5-06 over a 6.5x55,the gain isn't enough. If you have mauser go the whole way , open the boltface for 264,and really flatten out the traj.
 
The 6.5x55 is bigger diameter at the web. But i think a 6.5x284 might ream out all the original chamber. This has the same case capacity as the 6.5-06.

I think the 6.5x284 is one of the better calibers for power and accuracy.
 
If you have a long action go with the 6.5-06.I wouldn't build a 6.5 RemMag on a long action.Mine will be on a s/a 700 with Wyatt box or a s/a Model 70 if I can find one. Mur

You can buy forming dies, although I've also done it by removing the pilot from the resizing die, lubing with Imperial wax, and just running them into the die. Then cut to length, de-burr the neck in and out, take some measurements to see if you have to inside or outside ream the neck, do that if required, and you're good to go. I find it's easier if you use new brass over once fired. Then just put the pilot and neck ball back in the die, and resize the neck. - dan
