So My Dad has found this caliber that interest him, any experience hunting with this round? How's the recoil compare to a 7.62x39?

Recoil wise it’s a hair more then a 7.62x39.
I have no first had experience with the Grendel.
But looking at ballasts.
I would say comparable to a 243win in a hunting application.
I'd look for a CZ 527 chambered in this capable little cartridge.
Yes, I helped him purchase a 527 off a gunnut. Just received it today and has nice wood!
we(Dad and 2 boys) have 5 seasons big game hunting with 6.5 Grendel now, 14 big game kills and 1 wolf for an average of 5 kills a season. we have a bull moose, mule deer buck, bunch of whitetail deer, 3 black bears. 10 yards to 420 yards, average shot distance has been 163 yards and average recovered distance has been 13 yards, we haven't lost anything or had to let anything overnight, walk right up to all of them, we only use Hornady Black 123gr eld-m factory ammo for everything, we have a number of coyotes as well
that ammo from a short 16.1" barrel in a ruger American ranch has about 1700 fps impact velocity at 500 yards, more than enough for deer, from a 24" barrel you can add 110 yards...again, maximum efficiency for the 30 grains of powder you burn, the bullet at 123 grains with a modern .5 bc and .252 sd is great a fighting wind/drop and retaining velocity and that sd ensures penetration levels adequate for larger game than just deer, there are plenty of elk that have fallen to this cartridge at reasonable ranges
you can't wear a barrel out, you can watch most of it in the scope, anyone can shoot it well, it's affordable to shoot and you can get everything off the shelf so custom or reloading is optional now, what's not to love? you can't do more for 30 grains of powder, the 30-30 was the king of 30 grains of powder for a long time but the 6.5 Grendel is 21st century approach which triples, maybe quadruples, the effective range of the old interpretation of 30 grains of powder
it basically mirrors a 308 pushing a 168 grain ballistic tip in trajectory/penetration but 3/4's scale with 55% less recoil....how can ya not love it?![]()
Yeah! My Dad rifle has a 24" barrel so that will be good.
I had a cz 527, it measured more like 23.5" barrel and it shot that hornady ammo at 2552 fps, 110 yards further theoretical range for given impact velocity than my now Ruger American Ranch. Cz's are nice, slick the action up with jb bore paste and cycling a couple hundred times, put a little loctite on the creep adjustment screw on the trigger so it doesn't back out(you'll know if it does as you'll notice more creep), and try to find scope with short eye relief and short eye box, a leupold 3-9x33 ultralight (not made any more) would be ideal in the Warne medium rings which are about the lowest ring you can get, those are just cz 527 peculiarities due to how short the action is at the rear. Also if it doesn't come pillar bedded like my American didn't would get that done too. I put a 24" carbon barrel on mine after some time and it shot that same ammo 2605 fps! So more like a 650 yard set up for 1700 fps impact. Anyway, enjoy, fine choice in rifle and cartridge. Oh yeah, you can polish the lips of the magazine for smoother feeding as well and keep the magazine full in storage to weaken the spring a little. All that will make the cz a true polished snickity snick gem of a rifle....cz's wear in....they don't wear out. They only get better with time and shooting.
I recall reading a bunch of your info and testing. I have a question for you. How young did you start your kids in the Grendel? My worry is it might be too much, contemplating a 223 to start.
Thanks!
Would a typical 10 year old shoot one well, or better off to downsize to start ?
