Ok guys, here it is. I want a good all around barrel for my Encore. I already have a brand new .308 barrel that I haven't shot yet, but I have fallen in love with another....caliber. I love the 6.5x55. I love the .308 too I have a old 760 from my grandfather I will never part with.But I'm stuck here and want hear your opinions. I reload so factory ammo is no worry so subtract that from the equation, and also don't tell me oh you need a 7mm mag, 300 mag 270 etc etc. I have owned the 7mm and the .300 and they are too costly to shoot as much as I do ( around 100-200 rounds a month) even reloading. So just pick one and tell me why. thanks for any input in advance.

Military surplus easier to find. Relatively cheap factory FMJ easy to find. Hunting ammo cheap and available everywhere.
That said, assuming my father in law lives to a ripe old age, we'll be inhereting his 6.5 in about 30 years, so you can ask me then.

always been and still am a .308 fan, good for everything. Having said that, will buy 6.5x55 in a heartbeat. Had a Mauser 98 a while back in 6.5 x 55, super accurate due to its high BC and penetrates into next week because very high SD. Can't go wrong with either one. 308 is more readily available,in case you forgot to bring ammo...

6.5x55 FTW.
OP says he reloads, and in that case the 6.5x55 will really come alive. Of course, I shot my first two deer last fall with a 6.5x55, so I might be biased.

Depends on what you hunt more often. If you're after deer more often than elk or moose, then go with the 6.5x55. If you hunt moose more often than deer then pick the .308. I know many people here will say the 6.5x55 will do just as good on a moose as a .308 will, but I personally would feel more comfortable with the larger bullet and a bit more energy. I've owned a 6.5x55. I liked it. I know what it can do. It is a great deer round that can do a larger animals when asked. That being said, if I were hunting larger animals the .308 would give me more comfort. But if larger animals were on the agenda, I'd likely go with the .30-06 over the .308 anyway. If you already own a .30-06 or similar, then go with the 6.5x55 for versatility.
I love 308win, but several year ago, I got into shooting 6.5X55, and still shoot the round, even did up 2 rifles one for myself in 6.5X55 in heavy Varmint countour in 26" 1-8 twist, on a rem700LA, sweet gun, also own one of Mauser 98 with S&L heavy 27"barrel .8 muzzle diameter. 6.5mm in a very nice shooting round. sup price not see too many shoot 6.5 compare to 308
For all the guys having problems finding components, what is so hard to find? New brass is easily available, bullets are on the shelf in every store I have looked for them, powder and primer are no worse than any other calibre. What else is there?
