I get that you're enthusiastic about the german cartridge, but I gotta tell ya, you're not convincing any of us with that kinda language!:confused:

6.5x55 Swede Or 8x57mm?

I had a similar question a year or two ago. I decided I wanted to try the common WWII calibers as a way to find what I wanted - I thought 303, 8x57 and 30-06. I ended up with a pair of 6.5x55's (M38 and M29 in military wood) first, followed by a 303. I love the M29. I get 4" groups at 100m with iron sights and eyes that see the Visishot targets as a large black rectangle - if I could see the target better, I could maybe do the rifle more justice. Older eyes suck. I was using Sellier & Belliot ammunition.

My M38 is surplus for me - I prefer the longer older rifle. I like my 303 but went to a 9.3x62 instead of the 8x57. I decided that the 303, 8x57 and 30-06 were just too similar to want one of each.

I do not think you would be sorry with a 6.5x55. I am looking for another that I can mount a scope on to do target shooting and take hunting.

Interesting that a year or so ago, everyone I spoke with seemed to point me away from the Swede. Now it seems everyone I chat with is a closet lover of the cartridge.

Husqvarna 640 FN98 Commercial Action in 7.92x57mm IS. Classic! German engineering, Belgian receiver, Swedish barrel and stock. How can YOU go wrong?!

That sir, is one of the finest hunting rifles that has ever graced the pages of CGN. It makes a pimped out Weatherby look like a bad joke. Yours is a hunter's rifle, not a cheap gimmick used to incite the ignorant mob into opening their wallets.

I have been coveting one of those from the Tradeex site for months. But I cannot tell if those rifles are drilled for a scope. Are they? If not, do you think would it be wrong to have them drilled?

You can find some already d&t but the pre-1640 were not factory d&t for scope mounts, except some late models made for export. The late 640 (made of FN M/98 actions) were d&t for a receiver sight, though.
Not a crime to have it d&t, as long as it,s not a rare model. They were made for hunting, after all, and if having a scope on it would make them back in the trails of deep woods, that's just fine.

I wonder what sort of interference the bolt would have on scope clearance?
I just don't appreciate the suitcase handle look.
Could one be mounted low on these fine rifles?

I don't plan to scope it right away. I was thinking of a receiver mounted peep sight actually! Mine was tapped at the factory, to determine, look for the addition side mount drills on the right side of the rear receiver bridge.

honestly I owen both of these and truth be told I prefer the 6.5x55 over the 8x57 JS. nothing wrong with the 8x57 at all! its just personal prefference. the 6.5 has very little recoil and the 6.5 kills them dead dead dead!!!
if you have the option to shoot them both, pick the one you like.....but your choice should be based on marksmenship over performance.
hope this helps..

The M/98 as pictured have the same bolt handle as the Supreme. So nothing to worry too much about.

MM,
If you can find one, there was a Lyman sight made for the HVAs, it was called Lyman 57 HVA, it was an all steel sight. It allows to be installed without stock modification.
If you don't worry, then, any receiver sight good for a Mauser will fit.
