6.5x55 versus 260 rem

260 because

I bought the 260 because it is LESS popular than the 6.5. Load data shows lower pressure/velocity with the explanation of older rifles out there. I was NOT concerned about the 100-150 fps possible increase with either round. I liked the look and feel of the Ruger (my first and only Ruger) and bought it just before they discontinued that model in 260.
I have no concern of brass being discontinued anytime in the next 10-50 years as it is easy to stock up with a few hundred cases or neck up or down one of the many .308 derivitives.
If I had any concern over the possibility of getting 100 fps more from the 6.5 and felt that I NEEDED that little extra I would have gone to a larger caliber or just used my .308 or 300wsm.
Just my personal experience as I'm sure both are very capable of taking most Canadian game.

Seriously though - do you think the .260 rem will last 10 more years? If it was me I'd start stocking up a little sooner than that. Maybe a lot sooner.

The .260 rem is a good little cartridge, and one i heartily recommend to girls and young shooters. My buddy calls it a "ghey" cartridge but he's a very opinionated ba$tard and we don't pay him much attention. :) There's that little smiley thing again - means i'm making a joke, don't strain your typing finger this time, OK? :)

Nor will 7-08 or .308 brass...:)

Actually, what I've been reading is that there could be a shortage of .308 and .223 brass here in Canada very soon, because they are "military" cartridges and export from the USA may be banned, including brass. Maybe it's time to stock up on .308 as well.

Yes Jet

The rifle may not continue in production (I think it will but more limited than now even) but the cartridge/cases will be manufactured for years, as are a large # of discontinued calibers!
I may be wrong, but it is NO issue at all since the .308 cases will go on forever as they are used in a # of different configurations.

Also

We heard the same fear about the WSM's...they will fall off the face of the Earth! The 7mm might but the 270 and 300 are going quite strong. I can even buy the rounds at a gas station and UFA here in Taber. The 260 was in production before the Short Mags, although I'm not sure when the 260 designation was rendered, but it was here as the 6.5-08 (one of those rotten metric rounds).

The .260 is becoming very popular in the tactical rifle game. Black Hills is now loading for it and so is HSM. Can't see it going anywhere for a while. I shoot both and like them just the same.
