Is the challenger target load appropriate for hunting upland birds or small Game ? It says it's for clay shooting but does it matter?

Is challenger one of the best economical manufacturer shell options?

Is $8.30 ( taxes in) per 25 a good deal or can Better deals on 250 shell cases be found?
Thanks!!

I use it to shoot grouse; but I don't know if that makes it a good idea.

It has always worked well for me. I used to use rio #4's and still do for hares.

I don't hunt pheasants but I imagine it is not appropriate for them.

I know! So is that a good price ? Is challenger good?
83$ a case of 250 pretty much
What's te difference between upland shotgun ammo and clay shooting ammo?

Target loads are usually 1200fps or less to keep recoil at tolerable levels for hundreds of rounds per day, although there are some higher velocity target loads, which usually use less shot to limit the recoil. Upland loads are usually slightly higher velocity, they often use larger amounts of shot, and the premium loads often use copper or nickel plated shot, for better penetration. That being said, I have killed many Ruffed and sharptailed grouse using the cheapest #7-1/2 target loads.

I've used their 24 gram International #7.5 for grouse and woodcock. Great loads.

They also make heavier loads specifically for upland game. Their 1-1/8 ounce #6 are excellent for preserve pheasant.

yup I use Win target #7.5 at 1175 fps very effectively on snowshoe and grouse out to 30 have yards. I switch to proper upland loads later in the season.

They have 25 shell challenger 7.5, 8 and 9 shot higher velocity (1400 fps) for 7.39 plus tax and free shipping. Is this a good deal or should I hold out for cheaper ? Would a case normally be the same or can I wait and find somethin comparable for less if I'm in no rush ?

Deal is done in 3 hourish

Never hunted with them but I wondered the same thing.

Sad though since Cabelas usual sale price on the Challenger Target two years ago was $5.99. Last year it was $6.99. This year it's $7.39. Sigh....

* Cabelas free shipping does not typically include ammo or powder, so best to verify that.

Shipping was completely free....promo code cancelled it out , unless my invoice is wrong :s if it is I'd cancel it but even my emailed copy had free shipping

Is challenger better , on par or worse then Remington, federal or Winchester . I'm a noob to this .

Also I opted for 7.5 shot 1 1/8 ounce 1200fps and 9 shot 1 ounce 1400 fps.

What will be the general difference between the 2 types I bought if there is any. Ones slightly bigger shot , heavier (so more shot in it?) and 200 fps slower , the other is smaller shot, less weight ( so less shot in shell?) but 200 fps faster

Appreciate any info / advice / insight / experiences concerning this .

Challenger makes a decent product, and in Canada no less. I wouldn't use the #9 on Grouse, not enough retained energy at 30yrds, but way too much pattern density. Nobody wants to pick 585 pellets out of a grouse shot at 10yrds. My usual Grouse reload is 1oz of #6 at 1220 FPS plenty of retained energy out to 35yrds, and decent patterns. Use the #7 1/2's. The only difference between a target load 1 1/8oz at 1200 fps and a hunting load at the same speed is the marketing on the box. The target loads tend to have a better quality of components.

I changed the order from # 9 to # 8, I realized # 9 is to small and would lose killing power faster. It would injure instead of kill.

Thx for the info

As others said, they are fine in #7.5 but don't get too close or you will be picking excessive shot out of the tasty parts of the bird. I use #6 for grouse myself.

Cabela's has Challenger's on sale about four times a year which is when I pick up a few flats. LeBarons also had a decent deal on Winchester target flats last time I was there (March-ish). I think I paid $73.60 per flat. LeBarons also had Remington Gun Clubs for about $85 per flat. Bass Pro seems to be giving about 10% off on flats compared to individual boxes. I bought some Federal target loads for about $75. They even had AAs for $109.00 which is unfortunately a good price these days.

On those rare occasions when I shoot a grouse on the ground, I shoot high, and hit the head/neck area with the bottom of the pattern. If they are flying, I over lead them, so again the edge of the pattern strikes the head/neck area. I would never try and center the pattern on a grouse, especially with a 12 gauge. The #7-1/2 load provides a nice dense pattern that makes it easier to hit the head/neck area with the edge of the pattern.

That's good advice. The last grouse I shot I was trying for the head, but got a little too close to the shoulders... :/

Although we use a fair amount of target loads on upland game, when we go for a serious trip with the dogs we generally bring a flat of high brass game loads in 12 gauge #6's and 20 gauge #7.5's... no point cheaping out on a larger expedition.

I don't take breaks from bein cheap, more money in my pocket the better lol
But I understand ur point

What's better for small game 4,5, or 6 shot?( does 5 shot exist)
I Need a case of this and I'm set.
It seems like 4-6 shot is harder to find for around $80 a case of 250. Is it around ?
