a slug would slam the #### out of a moose...

I'd not feel so confident with squirrel shot though! sounds like you had a hairy day  thanks for sharing

If he closed ground any more, or turned toward you, he would have been so close there wouldn't be any difference between a slug, and 1 1/2 oz of lead pellets, that hand't begun to spread. When the muzzle is touching the target I don't care what comes out the pipe it's going to make a hole.

From 8' you would have killed that moose instantly. I shot at a moose skull from 10' with my .410 bore and 7 1/2 shot when I was a kid; it broke right through it.

Good story. You kept your cool and that's the sign of a good hunter. I tip my hat to you, sir! Moose aren't totally stupid but they also aren't that smart and I think if he was going to charge you, he would have, nevermind the tree. If a big critter comes at you and all you've got is what you've got then you use it... then you either win or lose...
I don't know if #6 would have turned him away, though. Probably, but not lethally, unless real close. I'm just glad you didn't have to use it.

Remember that a skull is no longer living bone and is very brittle compared to live bone. Live bone is tough stuff and very resilient.

Yes, but I was using a .410 bore! And think about it, 8' away, that is VERY close.

Yeah, perhaps you're right. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.

I'm with Tod here, great that you didn't have to shoot him, but it would have inflicted a pile of damage, a pump gun is capable of delivering in your case 4.5 oz of shot into his head pretty quick.
A buddy of mine from Deep River hunts birds alot with his lab always carry's the third round in his wingmaster a slug in case they come accross a bear. He lost a dog a while back bird hunting when the dog surprised a big sow with cubs, the bear was injured but his dog died.

Had to "pierce" the ear of a cow moose once from about 15 ft. with a .44 Mag. to get by on a trail ( spring fishing) , and have had to wave a few off ( same way you might with cattle when they wanted to get up the same trail as I was on whilke deer hunting. Best generally not to tangle with them. Glad your situation was easily resolved.

What would you have done had it charged you, Death Junky? There wasn't alot of options. If I didn't have the tree between us I would've been stomped for sure.
i gess i would have done what i had to do....... but i dont go in to the woods with out a partner and my partner has a 375 H&H he brings along.
pluss that is also a reason i like SxS shotty slug in one bbr bird in the other.
i just wouldent use slugs on a moose if i didnt have too i would work but i dont like it.

Whenever I'm bird hunting in bear country, I have some slugs ready to grab in the shell holders in my vest. They don't get in the way, but I feel more comfortable with them there just in case.

I have shot holes in the side of a pickyup truck at close range with 71/2 shot. Ripped big holes, too.

At that range it probbaly would have knocked the crap out of it, ripped a hole int he head, too. I don't know if it would be killed instantly, but I bet it would knock him down. 6 feet? That's gonna hurt the head. :D

BTW He probably htought you a rival when you YEEHAW'd at him. Better to talk like a human.
