Back in 2005 I had a rifle built that I figured would double as a good deer rifle and a good target gun for shooting out to 600 yards. Remington 700 in 260 Remington with a Gaillard barrel. Our local range only goes to 330 yards, so I never really got to realize the purpose I had in mind.

Finally this spring I have gotten to stretch it out a bit further and it's been alot of fun. :D

I'm shooting 107 gr Sierra MatchKings over 41.8 grs Varget in a R-P case & Fed 210M primer. 3110 fps avg from the 23" barrel

I had a big target set up at 593 yards. Ballistic program said 10MOA lift, and I fired one shot, walked down to see where I hit. A tad high (6") so I dialed down to 9moa and fired 3. Walked down to check it out and I was pretty surprised to see this :D

3 inches c-c, drifted about 8" right

Went back and fired another group which measured 8" and set up a 4L water jug and nailed it on my 4th shot :p

Today I went back and tried a couple more groups. First attempt was 4.25" :dancingbanana: 2nd group went 7"

So it took me 4 years but I finally am getting my feet wet into longer range shooting. I've been missing out on alot of fun

It shoots good with 140 Amax and 142 Matchkings, I just had these 107's and figured I'd use em up and they do shoot pretty good, only fired one group @ 100 yards and it did 3/4" 5 shot, and I remember when I tried them years ago out to 330 yards they shot good and consistent :D Twist is 1:8. Once I'm done shooting the 107 Sierra's I got half a box of 140 gr Berger VLD which I know shoot sub moa with both H100V & H4831sc, and a full box of Nosler 140 gr Custom Comps.

600 yards is a long ways away, good shooting!

It is amazing what a good rifle will do at those ranges, a few weeks back we were playing out to 1000 and 1250 on rocks, and the guys I was shooting with had guessed that 600 yard mark at 1000 yards and the 1000 yard rock over a mile !

Go's to show how far away 600 is. But quit impressive with your first cold bore shot that is not an easy task to get as close as you did on a single shot.

How is the Hybrid powder shooting? Any serious increase in velocity? I' ve been thinking about trying it in the 6.5x47 Lapua.
And those 140 VLD's are crazy long, and shoot nice and flat over 2800fps. Can't wait to see it.

I am one grain below the max (41.0 grs @ hodgdon.com) and getting 2600 fps with H100V. They claim 2670 fps at max. I find it a hair faster burning than 4350. With H4831sc @ 46 grs I am getting 2725 fps.

And getting lots of exercise in now, walking back and forth 600yds...:D

I'm going to do some more LR banging with the .308 shortly. Pretty sure I can go out to ~700yds, but haven't ranged it yet...I have been out to 500yds with decent results, but I'm going to build a gong to play with...

.308 will go 1000yds accurately, if you know how to steer it.

I never knew you F/O boys had noticed!:p

The funny thing is 600 feels like a long way away until you do it a while, then it starts to feel normal. All of a sudden you feel like you're right ontop of the 300 yrd target.

Have at it. That 260 should serve you very well indeed.

oh yeah, keep doing it, get hooked, and then come come shoot a match or two. We're always looking for new shooters!

Have you worked out a load at extended range?

not really, just shot a couple groups last winter @ 100m, will try the 140's later this spring once I run out of 107 grainers

Cogratulation on your medium range shoot.:D Out here in the central flatlands 600 yds is just over there. Your choice of caliber is excellent,I have only used my mountain rifle out to 500 with 120gr. nosler BT. Shoots pretty good if I do my part. This weekend there is a private party out of town shooting steel out to 1400yds, now this should be a challenge and I think I will take my .264 mag.
