6mm 105 grain A-Max

You will have no problem in a 9.25" twist. You would most certainly be fine if the cartridge is a fast one, such as 243 or 6mm Rem.

Thanks.

There are a few guys out there that claim a 1-8 is needed, Hornady says anything faster than 1-10 is good. I'll give them a whirl.

Now does anyone have a RL 22 load they'd recommend?

For what its worth

Chuck,
I bought close to 600 of these bullets exactly one year ago from a member on this board. He was shooting a Rem 700 VLS with 9 1/8 twist and trying several Hodgson powders they were punching elongated holes at 200 and 300 yards. (His words).

I decided to try them in my remington pump 243 (9 1/8th twist). Resting on a bench, at 100 yards I was getting 5 shot groups sub MOA. Not every group but more than a couple.
At 200 yards I had no sign of instability. The charge was 32 grains of varget.

I then tried some of the same load (same originally loaded batch) this winter at about minus 15. They showed clear signs of instability that day.

I tried some rounds loaded from the same batch this weekend. At 100 yards sub MOA and some holes touching. Never chronyed the load at any time. But varget is not temp sensitive apparently.

32 grains of varget in a 243??? That is a 6BR load. far too fast a powder for a 243/105 and not enough of it. I have no trouble believing it wasn't stable.

4350 or 4831 would be a far better choice

I used to shoot Sierra 107gr match bullets in a Rem 700 factory tube, my load was 47.5 gr's of Reloader 22. It had enough enegry to topple the 500 meter rams on the silhoutte range.

Hi Ian,
Varget was listed for the 105s in 2 of my data sources and 32 grains was only a grain off max load in my Lyman manual. I appreciate your insight. I will give H4350 a try as I am sure you are correct.

I've fired them in a 26" 700 VLS in 6mm with 48grs of Rel22....very accurate out to 300 M...as far as I had a chance to shoot them..never did chrony them....no problem in the 9.25 twist.

...and these bullets "require" a 1:8 twist, so the notion of a bullet with a stated twist requirement of 1:9 not stabilizing in the same twist of barrel frankly questionable.

Your results should be very typical.

The guy at the Sierra tech support was addament that this combo would NEVER work. Being a show-me kind of guy i had to prove him wrong. LOL

Chuck I would be very surprised if they work out of your rifle, my experience in my 243 Ackley shows that the 105-107 range of bullets require a 8.5 twist at least. Hey but try them you never know!
bigbull

I shot 105 AMax's in a 700 VLS 6mm a couple years ago. With 48 grs of Rel22 they shot very well out to 300 meters...max range at our club...these were loaded at .020" off the lands and fed single shot...too long to fit the magazine.

My REMY VLS with the 1 in 9.25 shoots the 105s quite well, I;ve shot it out to 700 yds at my 24 inch gong and have hit 2 out of 3 shots most times. Only wish I would have written down the powder I used......

Is there any chance it might have been 32 grains of Varget?

I wish it would be that easy but I haven't loaded any of my 243 rounds with Varget yet I used IMR 4350 and 4831. I have it crony-ed at 2980 fps so I just have to try some IMR 4064 to see if I can produce the same fps. I seem to think it was 4350 but cant believe I didn't write down how much I used....old age I guess.

Cheers:redface:

This thread has got me seriously thinking about sourcing a 6br barrel. I got 500 105 grain Amax, 7lbs of Varget and a according to research a great recipe. :D

Sorry for hijacking the thread.
