Hi Gang, for those of you who hunt with the 7-08 what ammo are you finding success with? I will be using mine for 🦌 🐻 and 🫎 out to about 300 yards with most opportunities much closer as is typical here in Ontario. Was figuring on one cartridge for all as opposed to 120s for 🦌 and 150 or 160 for 🫎. I have the rifle set up and grabbed 2 boxes of ammo ( so far ) to begin the process of figuring out what the Grey Lady likes best. Don’t laugh, they all get names. 😳

I have a 16.5” barrelled Remington #7 and a Tikka T3x I cut to 19” they both shoot 154 Interlocks or 139 Interlocks sub moa
But Hornady has pissed me off with their pricing so I am switching to Speer 145’s and have had good luck with both hotcore and grand slam’s so far, I have some 160 grand slams loaded as well, will try them next trip to the range. For hunting I believe one of the 145’s will be perfect.
 
I’m using Nosler Trophy Grade ammunition loaded with 140g Accubond’s out of my Browning X-Bolt 7mm/08. Have shot a fair bit of game with it over the years, and have never had anything that required a second shot. They simply tip over right there….
 
I've been using a 7mm08 for all my hunting needs for a few years. I've settled on the 140gr Nosler Partition bullet, leaving my 20" barreled Rem700 at a bit under 2900fps.

The deer and bear in my freezer were not fans of that combo...


I was previously using 140gr Federal Fusion bullets but I couldn't get more when I ran out so I switched to Partitions. Only shot 1 deer with that bullet but it was a bang flop at 212yds. Would definitely try them again (but I've got enough partitions to last a few years so I won't be trying them again any time soon).
 
Thanks very much for the advice. Have a box of Rem core loct 140s and a box of Hornady WT 139s so far to start. Will experiment and see what she likes.
 
Nothing wrong with those options. Killed a black bear with a CoreLokt in a 270win. One and Done. No complaints here.

But hunting is expensive (gas, tags, gear, etc) so the extra cost for premium bullets is worth it IMO.
 
I load 140gr TTSX for elk in my daughter’s 7-08 but she hasn’t been able to try them out on an animal yet. Shot distance will likely be very close whenever she does get one in the crosshairs but if I was loading for deer or longer shot possibilities I’d probably go with a 120gr TTSX or similar.
 
I've only used mine for deer with the hornady interlocks in the American whitetail and i've been more than impressed and wouldn't think twice about using it for black bear and have also had friends use the 180gr interlocks on moose from a 30-06 and the bullet worked well but obviously it's not a direct comparison.

I've also heard a lot of good things about the fusions and have a few friends who shoot them exclusively (although in other calibers so again not a direct 7mm-08 comparison) and wouldn't hesitate to shoot them at deer moose or bear.
 
Both my sons shoot 7mm08 rifles, and both have had very good success with standard Remington 140 CL bullets for deer and elk. I personally prefer a good bonded 160gr. for elk or moose, but can't argue with success.
 
All with a 7-08, loaded with 139 grain BTSP Hornady’s

Muzzle velocity of this load is only 2660 fps….. all one shot kills, all died less than a stones throw from where they were shot.

I haven't had any problems killing moose with Hornady 139 SST's or 140 TTSX's or 162 BTSP's or etc .
I believe patience and shot placement is King!
JMHO though :)

I use 120NBTs for deer in my 275 Rigby (7x57) and 160NPs for moose. Both have worked well in one each. If I was going to settle on one bullet only for both, I'd use a 140NP or TTSX, prefering the 1st. Saying that, the current Speer Grand Slams have a good reputation. I just bought a bunch of those 120gr for my 257 Roberts.
 
see how ya go with those mentioned, i would opt for something a little heavier for All round work, if not bonded.

its hard to ever argue with a NPT...
but the AB good choice, an maybe a TTSX option is for you?

something 150gr cup an core should work a treat too-- hornady / speer
