Hi there, I recently purchased the CSA VZ58 and now I'm in the market for 1000+ rounds.

I would prefer to shoot non-corrosive for the lower maintenance with regards to cleaning the rifle (I do intend to clean it after I shoot, I just read that corrosive ammo makes the gun dirtier).

From my limited research I can buy some online from Canada Ammo, Wolverine, or a handful of other Canadian companies.

Just wanted a bit of direction on what ammo to get as I am new to this calibre. With 9mm and 5.56 I just buy at the local gun store.

I read on another thread, a good way to tell if ammo is corrosive is if the casing is steel and not brass. Is this accurrate?

Thanks in advance.

Where are you located in Alberta? If you're close to Calgary and need non-corrosive ammo now, then go to TSE or Cabela's for some Barnaul. It's not as cheap as it used to be a few months ago but it is what it is. If you are patient then wait for CanadaAmmo to release their new supply of non-corrosive 7.62x39.
I've gone through Barnaul, Dominion, and Norinco without issue in my CZ 858. Close to 1000 rounds now.

Noncorrosive is overrated & over priced if it's FMJ. You're going to clean anyways so if you do it properly it's not an issue! If you don't need soft point hunting ammo then you're allot further ahead economically shooting the commie goodness!

Stick with the non corrosive. Yes it's a bit more than the corrosive but it's worth it a your cz deserves the good stuff.
Also hang tight as Canada ammo said he is waiting on a shipment of non corrosive stuff that will be a good price.

I shoot corrosive in my CSA VZ58. Once I left it for almost two months without cleaning. It took a little extra work to get it clean but it cleaned up fine.. I do not recommend leaving your gun for two months after shooting corrosive though...

Any of the corrosive surplus choices are fine if you plan on cleaning your gun right after. Otherwise, be ready to pay a little more for the non corrosive stuff.

Is there a difference between the norinco and the russian surplus ammo? I mean for $75 less you can get more ammo with the norinco (225 for 1440) compared to the russian surplus (300 for 1400). How much does a crate of non corrosive cost btw?

I have ~3000 rnds of corrosive 7.62 x 39 that I picked up a couple of years ago. Should I shoot it or hold onto it as an investment? :)

If it's only 3000 rounds, then shoot it.
Start thinking investment when you join the 10,000 round club...

I would agree . If you have a throw away or truck gun that you do not care about , then buy whatever ammo is cheapest ; but if you have a new rifle that you care about , then non-corrosive is the way to go...

Where are you seeing norinco ammo at $225 for 1440 rounds? Thats a bargain these days.
