Hi guys

I don't usually frequent the Hunting forums as I am more a milsurp guy.

Who makes an inexpensive 7.62x39 bolt action? I did a quick search and see CZ makes one, but its more than I want to spend, as this will be more of a fun plinker for my boys who sometimes want a bit more oomph than a 22.

Anything out there?

I believe Zastava makes a cheaper one .There is also the Ruger American ranch that takes mini 30 mags Other than that savage makes one as well as cz like you mentioned but they are pricey. Howa might even make a mini action in that caliber.

I dont mind a used one. 300-400.

Did norinco ever make one?

I did a quick search of the board and only came up with CZ's for 800 or so.

These days it makes more sense to get them one of the many inexpensive but decent quality .223 bolt actions that are available. Like a Ruger American. Get them a case of bulk .223 ammo and they will be happy for a long time.

I have a lot more x39 than 556 and my 556 is saved for my better rifles.

This is a gun that i can play around with and not have to worry about it.

My boys have precision 556's to shoot, plus AR's, Tavors etc.

You might find a Norinco JW-103 on the EE in your price range. I don't think anyone is still bringing them into the country. From what I recall, they were half decent, but not great by any stretch.

The Zastava, new, are in the $670 range. TradeEx carries them.

Given the only reason for one of these is the cheap ammo, would it be wise to go with a Stainless gun for somewhat easier maintenance, in that at least a cleaning shortcoming, despite efforts, would not be as bad for the gun.

I learned with guns. If you look and like one model but buy something for say $700 that's $300 less instead of$1000 the two guns will eventually cost you $1700.

I recently picked up a synthetic CZ527 to add to my wood stock version so I have an iron sighted bush option and a small scope option for deer next year. The synthetic stock feels really neat too it's not just plain plastic it's almost rubbery faux leather in its texture.

If you have all that x39, yet precision rifles and AR's/Tavors in 5.56, not sure why you'd want an x39 bolt gun. Sounds like you need a 858/58 or some other blaster for that cheap ammo.

If you are talking about surplus, most bolt guns don't do well with the hard mil primers, and you will find you get a lot of "clicks" when you want a bang.

That said, the Ruger American ranch would be my first choice, i have one and it's a fantastic little rifle, but still gets to $700 new.

….because I do.

I only have experience with the the zastava. I wanted a little bolt action centre fire for my son to learn on and the zastava fell into my lap for a great price. But if I wanted to spend more money I’d look at a detachable mag rifle

I've got a Savage Scout rifle in 7.62x39; I enjoy it so much that every time I see one for a good price in the EE I want to get another. I like the idea of a cheap scout practice rifle, but it would be easy to mount a regular scope if that's what you want. Accutrigger, detach mag, good accuracy, nothing to complain about and lots to like.

I had 2 of the M85's, one was okay, one was a lemon, both were very rough to cycle. They were both $375 new from CanAmmo when they were on sale.
I don't think they are even worth $375. I'd find something else. The Norks are equally crappy with pressed and pinned barrels, rear locking bolt, also rough as hell.
Howa Mini, CZ, Ruger, Savage, buy once, buy something decent.

You forgot the Howa! I have one and I love it. It shoots sub-MOA with my handloads and it's a marvelous rifle if you're pushing or punching the bush. It's my back up rifle for deer (after my Mossberg Patriot .308), and my 14 yr. old nephew will be using it this year for his first hunt. It is more than the OP wants to spend, but my own experience is that you get what you pay for. I'd recommend biting the bullet (so to speak) and buying a quality rifle that you can plink with as well as use for serious shooting. There! my 2 cents worth.
