I'm thinking of getting a CZ858 or an SKS, but I'm worried about the effects of using milsurp ammo.

Anyone have any anecdotes or stories about using this kind of ammo and any harmful effects on your guns?

huh these guns were made to shoot military ammo... If you clean either rifle well after shooting corosive ammo it should be all good. Military ammo isn't dangerous or harmful to military type weapons since they were meant to use them. One thing with military grade ammo is that you're gonna have more "duds" and its not gonna be as precise as commercial ammo.

Just flush the rifle with HOT water after each use. The barrel, gas tube, bolt, bolt carrier, and the receiver just need a hot water flush to wash the salts away. And since the water is hot, it evaporates near instantly. Dry any remaining water, run a few solvent patches through to get the carbon and copper out, lube and re-assemble.I like to do the patches first to get any thick deposits out, then i flush with the water, but its up to you what way you like. Once you get the hang of it it takes less then 15 minutes with an SKS. If your in a really dry area, you can wait a few bit. If your in a humid area, you will see rust form in a few hours. Even if a little rust does form, chances are it only superficial and will rub off with your fingers.

You asked for anecdotes and stories...

I have used, exclusively, corrosive czech surplus in my civilian CZ-858 (NON-chrome lined barrel). What has happened so far?

Well...

I have shot several thousand rounds of 7.62x39 for less than $300.

I clean my rifle as per normal after I take 5 minutes to flush it with boiling water.

Pretty boring anecdote....except for the part where I shot several thousand rounds for under $300!

Anecdote:

Water causes rust.

Sprayed my 858 down with Windex at the range at advice from buddy who reads these forums. Got home and there was rust all over the gas piston where it was pitted.... I guess WINDEX has a lot of WATER in it.

I think I'll wait till i get home and try the boiling water trick, no sense in getting the rifle wet at the range ammonia or not, its still moisture.

:)

me and a friend both go for surplus ammo, 7.62x39 and x54. Accuracy is not as good as handloads or store bought $1/round ammo.

As for corrosion it's fine, clean your rifle like normal and it will be ok, do you think the russians sat around and boiled water to clean their rifles? or stocked up on windex? I doubt it but i've been wrong before.

boiling water and liquid wrench... i use a little nitro solvent down the tube, swab it clean and then give it a patch of gun oil... I was SUPER cautious/thorough with the cleaning process the first time I took it out and shot corrosive. I didn't need to worry so much.

So I'm thinking of getting an 858 in a little while, and I have a related question...
Does the water just go down the drain? Or just dump it in a corner of the yard?... I kind of don't want to ruin the drains, or maybe the water in the city.

I rub mine down with CLP and run a patch through it, that's all. And I have no signs of rust or anything,if it's taking you hours to clean it you may be obsessive.

I'm certain that during the Cold War, soldiers didn't boil vats full of water and carry bottles of windex.

what you're supposed to clean those things? I thought they were disposible

I got lazy and forgot to clean my sks after 400 rounds at the range with czech ammo. THEN, I left it in my very damp basement for a week. I don't recommend this. All was fine except the gas piston. It was thick with rust HOWEVER it wiped right off and look as good as new. Had I left it longer Im sure it would have ended badly.

I clean mine when I get home now. No hot water, no windex etc Just regular way I clean all my guns. Dismantle, clean bore with wire brush then patches etc, lightly oil and put em away, no worries.

Would you mind telling me how you arrived at this conclusion ?? What makes, what years ??

Now we have it.... Simple, cost effective cleaning.... well said....

People are paranoid about corrosive ammo, fire a mag and if not cleaned within 10 seconds the barrel falls off....

During WW-11 ALL ammo used by all sides was corrosive, the average foot soldier certainly did not have time to clean his firearms everytime they were fired, yet the guns survived.

I run a 1/4 cup of ammonia (not windex) down the barrel then rinse that out with boiling water

a clean patch and a patch with clp and back in the case they go

SO.............pouring the water on the ground in your yard, will do less damage to the water tables, than pouring it down the sewer? It's not like you're dumping barrels of toxic waste here. The water dilutes, and washes away, some corrosive salts. Every time you do this, you're washing less than a gram of these salts away. I typically bring a thermos of boiling water to the range with me, and just do it right when I'm done shooting. You are definitely over-thinking here. Boiling water, then clean like any other rifle. Follow that, and it'll outlast you. You won't get your picture on the news for singlehandedly destroying the environment, either.

hay i shot around 1000 rounds thru my sks and cz858 noto know what corrosive ammo and how to take extra care after..

no rust inside barrel at all even after 3weeks so go for it
