7.62X39 Enough for Deer?

Ammo for that calibre is getting harder and harder to find. I have a Mini-30 that collects dust as 15 years ago I could buy fullmetalcase shells for under 3$ a box. Was fun with the 30 round mags but this calibre is on the governments s**t list as its the AK calibre. I beleive it will get even worse to find ammo in the future.

:confused::confused::confused:

For an even better com block rifle in an even better caliber, any of the mosin's are miles ahead of the sks(and imho I would take it over any .303). Igman or bell soft point ammo is reasonably accurate and preforms exceptionaly well on deer. With practice anything out to 250yards is posible with the irons.

this would be my preferred round for deer. Ballistics are great cuz slower moving bullets penetrate better. and the soft point expand nicely. Why re-invent the wheel. recoil is light making practice more pleasant, flinching becomes a non issue. Great to 200 yards and if the game is further get closer. ITs called hunting not artillery practice.

Ammo not a problem. Buy a case is surp and use that to practice and buy a few boxes of Priva Partizan SP that is around now and that should do you for years to come for hunting.

Just windex the baby down after the corrosive.

Not to hijack anything (yes the cartridge will work fine out to 200ish) but I will put my .284 WCF and 140gr TTSX's at 3000fps up against your 123gr bullets at 2300fps and we will see which penetrates farther.:rolleyes: And you go ahead and do your best to crawl within 200yds of deer out on some of the places I hunt. It is a freakin' chore to belly crawl within 400yds sometimes. Your new here so go easy on blasting people who shoot past 200yds. I've worked harder for 400yds shots than most people out east work for 50yd shots.

QUOTE "The cartridge/gun you are talking about will not kill whatever animal you are asking about, period. Why? Because you lack confidence in it, and you need to ask a bunch of people you don't now if it will work or not. On that note you may realize that you have three options: stop hunting, use a magnum, or kill yourself. But don't try to use the cartridge/gun that you just asked about because it doesn't have enough power to kill you either." QUOTE

Wow....aren't you a ray of sun-shine:p

I'm surprised we haven't heard from RollingRock yet. He's the resident expert on hunting big game with the 7.63x39(SKS). IIRC he has even taken a few bears with it. IMHO it's about equal to the 30-30, good for moderate range shooting inside 200 yards.

I know, realistically I am only hurting myself;):D
You get a little annoyed with "rural myths" after awhile. After I had the 4th guy this season tell me his 300 Whangdnum is the best thing for muley does, and another ten guys tell me about his .243 shoots the eyes out of moose at a mile, mile and a half, I get testy. But then again, only reading or experience will educate you, and that sounds too much like work for most people.
Heck, I would love to have a nice little CZ in 7.62x39 for shooting deer under 200yds. Heck with the 150gr bullets at 2200fps, I'd probably stick it behind the shoulder of an elk or moose out to 150yds and watch'em croak.
Slow bullets don't penetrate better than fast ones. Slower velocities encourage "normal" bullets like Hornady and Speer to penetrate and "kill better" than Magnums and .270's cause that is what that bullet was meant for. You want to see penetration, wind a 130 TTSX out of a 264 Win. Mag at 3300 fps and watch it keep going through boards. That is all I am saying.:D

Careful there Skippy. Alot of people invest a lot of $$ & time on the range to become profiecient at these ranges.[/

Wow I am new here and I make one comment about taking game from long range ( that it might not be the most sporting or humane way to hunt) and I am immediately slammed and my name has been officially changed to Skippy. Oh well I stand by my comment. Lots of things can happen in 400 yards. Thanks for the welcome.
