7.62x51 Nato Ammo surplus available?

Well the interchangable symbol is only applied to the crate, not the cartridge itself, so you are barking up the wrong tree again.
If you want too look something up, find the US NATO brass specs for 7.62NATO and that might help you understand the difference.
Hirt being 30 grains lighter, much softer then IVI, and lacking the NATO cross should have explained the reasons it's not up to NATO standards...
It's also designated on the crate that it is made for the STG 58. I don't think it would run very well in an M240.

chambers on m240/c6 is very loose. it would run just fine.

Oversized chamber and hard extraction is precisely the reason it wouldn't work very well, brass is too thin and soft for any GPMG. Torn rims and head separations would be the result.
Here's a thread on just how much expansion happens to IVI 7.62 in the C6, it's pretty crazy when you can't physically resize a piece of brass in a press.

Hitzy is bang on for everything in this thread.

Correcting misinformation among gun owners can be a real PITA.

Having fired around 20,000-ish rounds of 7.62 ammo through a GPMG in my time, I can count the amount of times I've had to use the broken case extractor on one hand. Not something I'd wish to do in a hurry. Nor would I want to use ammo that wasn't up to the task.

Now, broken extractors, main springs, faulty trigger groups, jammed feed pawls, on the other hand are much more common. Easy to fix though.

Depends what you want to achieve. A bullet hose to make noise and empty cases? Or repeatable bullseyes? FWIW, what are the headstamps? There is enough knowledge here to advise. But, a mixed lot of ammo is not worth much except making fun.

Just want to dispose of it. I'll have to catalogue the head stamps and post it here.

I'll dispose of it for you :)

Thanks for the offer LOL. I'd rather do some gong ringing if this stuff is safe to shoot.

Looks like the majority of it is head stamped ZV (or ^Z) 7.62 69 and has a black lacquered primer.

... What kind of hassle will it be to clean the bbl and gas system after?

M

The corrosive primers contain salts which attract moisture. Which causes rust on unprotected surfaces. The general treatment is to use Windex or ammonia to neutralize the salts, then use a more generous than normal cleaning routine until you are happy that no salts remain in the pores of the steel or aren't leeching out. That's all. More work to clean than a stainless or carbon steel, but not as bad as many people let on.

Not sure if anybody has mentioned it but the Edmonton Cabelas has 308 surplus now and it looks to be the reloadable brass stuff. I bought 2 packages of it and the price is $199 per package. I haven't shot any yet so don't know if its boxer primed or not

Is it Hirtenberger?

All that I have from Cabelas is Berdan. But thats only 5 of those battle packs. The case I got from CSC was Berdan as well.

I'll check the other 3 cases from CSC when I get home. I haven't found any boxer at either of those retailers yet. Doesntt matter. For that price I'm okay not reloading it anyway.

I'll tumble it and make artwork. ;)
